MISSIONARY SYMPOSIUM In this issue the questions are answered by students taking the Missionary Seminar course at Biola. What is the nature and purpose of missionary deputation work? by organizing a board of their own. Free-lance missionaries often promote their case by expressing their utter dependence upon the Lord, but I have found that most missionaries working in a society are also utterly dependent upon the Lord.” Helen Irvine

“Missionary deputation is a spec ialized ministry with several aims. The' m is s ion a ry on deputation should bring a missionary chal lenge to the local church to go, to give, and to pray. He should not endeavor to take the place of the preacher but should give forth missionary information. This does not mean that he cannot give a message from the Word, which bears upon the cause of missions, or of the deeper Christian life.” Betty A llen “ An effective deputation ministry can be realized by carrying a sup ply of missionary materials, pic tures, and illustrations from the field to the local church. Personal contact with believers in their homes offers a great opportunity for personalizing a missionary in terest.” John Slevcove “ Missionary deputation work should not be primarily a money raising campaign. Gifts for the sup port of the missionary will be forthcoming in proportion to the blessing received through the dep utizing missionary.” O. H. S. What is the nature and function of a missionary board? “The mission board is composed of Christian individuals with a missionary vision who regulate the policies of the mission, screen can didates for the field and assist in getting accepted candidates out to the field. A mission board serves as a go-between for the missionary constituency at home and the mis sionary on the field.” Maurice Pool “ The mission board is an admin istrative body formed for the pur pose of co-ordinating the interests of the mission that it might run smoothly, orderly, and success fully.” Abraham Bannis What is your evaluation of a free lance missionary? “ I believe that free-lancing in missions is doing the job the hard way, though in some cases it might be the only way the job can be done. It seems to me that most free lance missionaries usually end up

“ I do not think that free-lance missionary work is practical for the following reasons: The missionary needs the asso ciation of believers at home. He needs the influence and counsel of older missionaries on the field. Most foreign countries will not admit a missionary unless he is identified with some particular reputable society.” Vincent Irwin “While the Bible teaches that souls are won individually by some individual led of God, it also teaches us to love each other and work together harmoniously. It seems to me that those who are most successful in missionary work enjoy the fellowship and support of other believers.” Lee Shoemaker “ A close observation reveals that most free-lance workers are such because of their inability to work harmoniously with others or sub missively with a board. On the other hand, some individuals, who have worked alone, have been used to win many souls.” O.H.S. What are your likes and dislikes with regards to missionary news letters? “ The missionary news letter which holds my interest is neat in appearance, short, colorful, and contains actual missionary facts.” Norma Partnoff “ The missionary news letter should begin with some particular point of interest. The content should give as much information as possible in a little space. Specific prayer requests and notes of praise are always appreciated.” Betty Allen “ The best missionary news letter will stimulate further interest and will inspire its reader to a more serious investigation of a particular mission. Most of the missionary news letters we receive are too long and contain too much detail.” O. H. S.

The first three years are the most formative years of life. More can be accomplished — or lost — at this time than at any other time of training. Horace Bushnell says, “Let ev ery father and mother realize that when their child is three years of age, they have done more than half they will ever do for its char acter.” How clearly the Lord Jesus understood the importance of the child! He always had time for children. The die is cdst during these first few years. This is a startling responsibility! S e c * 7 6 c T tc tv Tw o-n - | Three Time Nursery Bible 1 Course.
