facility at the end of the Bronx, with a hundred kids in cottages and dorms.” He still keeps in touch with them, adding affectionately, “I have a Facebook group with ‘the homies.’” Afterward, he joined the Navy for twenty years, focusing on service to others. “I turned it into a job. In the Navy, I had the Community Relations projects so that we would go to the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia—we would volunteer, we would paint orphanages, and repair the playground; there was always a way of giving back. I used to coach kids’ soccer and baseball; I’ve always been helping others out.” When Gabriel retired from Navy electronics, he wanted to do something different. He joined the Mary Hall Freedom Village team three years ago, starting as a Veteran’s Employment Services Specialist, helping Veterans to move forward with finding jobs and “Addressing any barriers that are keeping them from finding employment.” He helped clients
