with all they would need to find and keep an initial job: everything from resumes and communication skills to clothing, boots, gas and transportation, tools, etc. The next step would be to help direct the client toward a career. And now, he focuses specifically on being the primary resume writer for the TROOPS program—a challenging and rewarding position. “I’m very experienced. I won best creative writer in high school. I’m into writing, and I’ve been trained at this service since I’ve gotten out of the military, so I’ve been working in employment services and teaching resume classes and employment interview classes.”
search. “When I reviewed this person’s resume, it had good basic information, but it was reading like a job description. I sat down with him and got details. He was in logistics. I asked, ‘How many units were you moving per day? How many trucks did you have in the loading zone?’” Gabriel got enough information to do what he calls “ Taking the task and turning it into achievements.” Instead of the when and where of a job, he turned the resume into actions such as “I processed this many items, worth over whatever amount of dollars, and we got this done with four trucks, overnight.” Instead of job details, Gabriel changed the resume to achievement details. “That’s the biggest thing with people writing resumes, they will say what they did, but they won’t explain the results. So, I like to work on result-driven resumes rather than task accomplishments. Mention something really great that they did.” So, what happened to the client in logistics? “ He started getting interviews. All of a sudden, he had fifteen interviews within two weeks. He got the job and came in to thank me.” To Gabriel, that’s what it’s all about: “ Giving back, helping out. It’s a lot of effort, but every time someone gets that job, it’s worth it.”
His process at MHFV? He gets a copy of his clients’ initial resumes and talks to them about their past experiences, talents, and career wishes. Then he makes the resumes shine. For example, Gabriel had a client who wasn’t getting any callbacks from his job
