AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
Giving Thanks for Our Many Blessings
Temperatures have certainly dropped, the air is crisp, and a certain holiday joy is circulating — the holiday season has arrived! Every year, the holiday spirit captivates me. I love gathering with friends and family to celebrate and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays — embracing delicious food and desserts is amazing. After all, it’s one of the only days of the year when it’s acceptable to go back for seconds and even third helpings, then indulge in pie shortly after. Nonetheless, Thanksgiving is a day in which we celebrate gratitude, something many of us, myself included, don’t do enough of these days. In a world where shocking events have transpired, we still have much to be grateful for. This year, I’m so thankful for my family, my wife, and our baby. Just a few short months ago, we became parents and welcomed a baby into this world, and it’s one of the greatest blessings to be a father.
I’m also grateful for my health, the ability to work, those I work with, my friends, my companions, and the food on my table every day. We can easily take these for granted; for many, health is a struggle. Some may have recently lost a loved one or are estranged from family. Others might struggle to find stable employment or find shelter and their next meal. This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful our society at large appears to be mostly back to business as usual. For over two years, our world has been at a standstill as we all learned to navigate a global pandemic. For quite some time, it was difficult to do what we do best here at Holland & Usry — help people. We had to find new ways to communicate with our clients, go to trial, and get our clients the compensation they deserve. Thankfully, technology saved the day, allowing us to continue serving our clients, but we are glad to slowly regain some normalcy in how we assist our clients. While I am grateful our world is returning to some level of normalcy, many people are still struggling with the loss of a loved one, unemployment, or financial complications due to the pandemic. So, while it’s business as usual for many, so many are still struggling and suffering, and I want to remind everyone to be ever-mindful of our responsibility to help one another. Whether you’re struggling through a divorce with complex financial issues, a child custody case, an injury due to a car accident or an accident on the job, or if you’ve been charged with a crime, my law partner, Rob Usry, and I are here to help you get through this difficult time in your life.

Nicholas Bostic had a heated argument with his girlfriend one night, so he went out driving around to clear his head and relax. Little did he know he would become a hero that same night. During his drive, he witnessed a raging fire that had engulfed a family’s home. Bostic stopped his car and ran inside despite the flames. He immediately began yelling for anyone since no one appeared to be inside the house — not even emergency personnel. His cries woke up 18-year-old Seionna Barrett, the oldest of five children, and she gathered her siblings together to exit the home. Bostic ran to Barrett and her young siblings, and he helped her take the children outside. But Barrett then told Bostic that her 6-year-old sister wasn’t with them. Without a second thought, Bostic again entered the home, hoping to rescue the little girl. The fire continued to spread quickly, and Bostic described it as a “black lagoon” of smoke on the ground floor. He checked all of the bedrooms but couldn’t find the little girl. Then, as he approached a window to exit the home, he heard a child’s cry. Bostic then had an internal conversation with himself: He knew the child needed help, and although he was terrified to go back downstairs through the fire and smoke, he wouldn’t quit. After wrapping his shirt around his mouth, he ran through the home, following the girl’s cries for help. Once he RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME Late-Night Driver Becomes a Sudden Hero
found her, he picked her up, ran upstairs, and jumped out the window onto the lawn. All of the children were safe and suffered no injuries. Bostic received first-degree burns and severe cuts on his arm. He was airlifted to the nearest hospital once first responders arrived at the scene. Bostic’s cousin created a GoFundMe to pay for Bostic’s medical bills, and it collected $556,000. Today, Bostic is healthy and healing. He now has a new perspective on life and is looking forward to whatever his future might hold.

–Karen S. “After working for over 55 years, I had an accident at work. Everyone was telling me that I needed an attorney. I researched online, and Holland & Usry had great reviews. I called and spoke with Rob, made an appointment, and he took it from there. Rob and his staff were excellent and answered all my questions. Rose, his assistant, was very helpful anytime I called. He had written a book about the process, and boy, was that helpful. I never was in the dark about where in the process we were. If ever in doubt, call Holland & Usry, and Rob, Rose, and Pam will take care of you.”

‘IT AIN’T OVER TILL IT’S OVER’ A Workers’ Comp Settlement Exceeds the Award
Good News In the words of baseball, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” At the end of a long, hard-fought case in which the insurance company ignored its responsibility, we helped our client, Phil, achieve a settlement for more money than the comp commissioner gave at the hearing. While working for an auto parts deliverer in Jonesville, South Carolina, he delivered a 50–100-pound item to a body shop in Lexington, SC. Part of the transport required him to carry it himself about 20 feet. Thirty minutes later, while driving home, he experienced a sharp pain in his shoulder. He pushed through the pain and continued to work, but once in agony, he filed for workers’ compensation. Unfortunately, the insurance company denied the claim. Phil was eventually diagnosed with a serious nerve injury that kept him out of work for over a year — a desperate situation for most working folks. Still, neither his employer nor the insurance company offered to help. Bewildered, he and his wife sought assistance from us. Phil’s injury caused some head-scratching among even medical professionals. The first specialist he saw was an orthopedist who evaluated him for a rotator cuff tear. The orthopedist ruled that out but realized Phil might have nerve damage, so he wisely referred him to a nerve specialist, a neurologist. I met personally with both his orthopedist and the nerve specialist so we could explore Phil’s injury and present the truth to the insurance company. The neurologist gave a clear diagnosis that Phil’s pain was
caused by work and resulted in a brachial plexus injury, which required him to be out of work. When presented with undisputed medical evidence that Phil got hurt on the job, the insurance company still refused to accept the claim. But, after a two-year fight, the insurance company finally took ownership. The commissioner awarded Phil back-owed temporary disability income totaling $23,819.33 and a permanent disability award of 40% to the left arm, totaling $36,961.76. Then, the insurance company decided to try settling for more than the award and offered about another $10,000, resulting in a total settlement of $83,500.00, of which Phil repaid his health insurance $13,340.60. We are so glad we got to help Phil, and while he was able to rely on his military pension and health insurance to avoid financial devastation, that’s not the case for everyone. That’s why it’s so important for any injured worker to seek professional legal help at the first sign of stonewalling or denial by the workers’ compensation insurance company to do right by you when you get hurt at work!

WORKING TOWARD A PASSION Breaking Stigmas and Finding a Dream Job
As TikTok’s popularity rises, it is becoming more and more integrated into society and people’s lives. With so many people on one network, information and trends can spread incredibly fast. One such trend is of users who are documenting their everyday lives. Now, many of these documentaries are just for fun, but some people are using their platforms to break stigmas and encourage others to pursue their dreams. Jacky Li, for example, is a 24-year-old TikToker who has been documenting his life as he hustles to find his dream job. Li has accumulated over 120K followers and 2 million likes as he shares his life as an unemployed person who is living with his parents. After his morning routines, Li comes home to answer emails and often edits photos and videos as a side gig. He will also brainstorm ideas for YouTube and TikTok while looking for job opportunities on LinkedIn. Then, before he ends his day, he journals and creates a to-do list so that he can push himself closer to reaching his dreams.
But while Li continues to pursue his ideal career, his parents often pressure him to find a corporate job and lecture him for not having one. Although his videos do share occasional trips out with friends for dinner or breaks between tasks, the rest of his time does look quite productive.” His content shows that it’s still okay to live with your parents even in your mid-20s, despite the stigma that it’s bad or too dependent. Although many people look down on those who live with their parents after graduating college, things can be incredibly expensive — and living with your parents can make a huge difference. His content is inspiring and relatable to viewers, and many of his followers have encouraged him along the way. Viewers note that although he may not have a full-time job just yet, his productivity shows that he is on the right path!
