This time of year, it feels like every time you turn around there’s another holiday to plan for. Once Halloween hits, we have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, all within a handful of weeks. There’s a lot going on, and I love every minute of it! The holidays mean getting to spend time with my family. My daughters have been out of the house for years, and while one lives close by, I don’t spend as much time with her as I used to. Of course, my other daughter just graduated from college down in Florida, and we’ve seen her even less over the last few years. This is just something that happens as your kids grow up, but when the holidays come around, it means I get to see them both! If you asked me to pick what I loved most about this time of year, it would be spending time with my girls — and the food. Thanksgiving especially means the best meal of the year. My mother-in-law makes the bird, my father-in-law makes prime rib, and we all get together for a night of great food. By far, my favorite dish at Thanksgiving dinner is my wife’s killer green bean casserole. She makes it the same way every year, based on a recipe passed on by her grandmother. When it comes to food, Debbie’s green bean casserole is as close to perfection as you’ll find on Earth. After dinner is done and the dishes are clean, we have a tendency to settle down, loosen the belt a couple notches, and go to war over Catch Phrase. The whole family loves to play games, and we all have a competitive streak. Debbie won’t play Monopoly with me anymore. She claims it’s because the game is too long, but the truth is, she can’t stand the fact that she’s never beaten me. At Thanksgiving, we’re a big crowd. There aren’t many games that can Turkey, Green Bean Casserole, and Catch Phrase IT’S A HOLIDAY WITH FAMILY AND FOOD!

accommodate 12 people, but Catch Phrase has served us well. Sure, there’s always someone who “forgets” to hit the button before they pass the disc, but we still have a lot of fun. We’ll spend a few hours playing games before everyone begins to part ways. Each year, I’m reminded of how precious these gatherings are. The family is getting older, and moments spent together are more cherished than ever. It’s easy to get swept up in what we have to do this time of year: go shopping, cook dinner, decorate the house, buy gifts. Let’s not overlook everything we get to do during the holidays. We see our loved ones, spend quality time together, and make new memories. The food is delicious, but I would trade it all, even the green bean casserole, just to spend the night with my family, playing Catch Phrase. The laughter and fun we get to share is ultimately what Thanksgiving is all about — well, that, and seeing the Dallas Cowboys lose (go Seahawks!).

Happy Thanksgiving!
