CULTS CRITIQUE by Betty Brueehert

C laim ing six thou sand adherents, the addicts to hallucinogens, in cluding LSD, have organized the “Neo-American Church,” complete with clergymen, leaders called bish ops, primates or “ boo-hoos,” a fear ful church bulletin, bearing the dis gusting name of Divine Toad Sweat, and a catechism. Their underground press publications even include a psy chedelic coloring book. Chief of this particular group is former clinical psychologist for N.Y. schools and prisons, 37-year-old Arthur Kleps, who holds a M.A. from Syracuse. With two other groups, the notorious T i m o t h y Leary’ s drug-addicted “ League of Spiritual Discovery” and yoga-centered William Haines’ Sr. Ram Ashrama, Kleps’ followers are established on the magnificent estate of William Mellon Hitchcock (descen dant of the famous former secy, of the treasury and art patron, Andrew Mellon) at Millbrook, N.Y. A l t h o u g h t h e Neo-American Church has had a number of brushes with the law, it counts upon the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the use of the “ sacred cactus” derivative in the worship of the Southwestern Ind ian “Native American Church” ; Kleps claims that psychedelic substances are “ manifes tations of God’s grace” which lead one into the “mind of Gcd.” He de clares that modern man cannot ex perience the mysticism of the an cients without LSD. Activities advo cated by this psychedelic church in clude attempts on the part of the members drafted into the service to convert their “buddies” to use of hallucinogens as “ sacraments” and use of names of conservative politi cians for return addresses on their wild correspondence. Kleps’ declared ambition is “ to turn on the whole world” whereas God’s Word speaks of being not “ turned on” but “ turned into.” “ The wicked shall be turned into hell” (Psa. 9:17). Christians are appalled, but not surprised, at the rise of these demon-possessed systems, f o r we read in John 4 : 3 : “ This is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already it is in the world.” It is all part and parcel of the preparation for world worship of Satan’s “man of sin” during the tribulation period. Thank God, ere that day of darkness covers the earth, Christ will return for His own!
