CHOOSE KINDNESS The Secret Ingredient to a Healthier Life

Everywhere you go, whether online or in person, people will be unkind. Let’s face it — social media and the internet have made it easier than ever to criticize others from behind a screen. I recently went online to read about a well- known, respected hockey player who had passed away. While many commented to express their condolences, one person just had to

best not to return any unkindness. It’s natural to feel defensive, but that’s where we run into problems. We must do our best to hear someone, acknowledge what we need to work on, and try not to turn it around on them.

I have six children, and my fifth was a real challenge. No matter what we did, it felt like he could not be taught the same ways as my other children regarding rules, chores, and

put a negative spin on the whole thing. He had to give his two cynical cents that people were silly for hurting over someone they didn’t even know. November is Healthy Lifestyles Month, and when we think about what it means to have a healthy life, we tend to think of eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. But another important

structure. He pushed us in almost every way possible, and I remember saying, “If we don’t start loving this kid, we’re going to lose him because he’s not going to feel good here.” I realized in every conversation with him, I was approaching it with criticism.

We did change. I hugged him more and treated him with more kindness, which made a world of difference in how he behaved. He has grown into an incredibly humble person, grateful for his upbringing. Being kind to someone when it’s difficult can help us grow, too. Ultimately, we can’t control how kind or unkind others may be, but we can control the lens through which we view others. It’s easy to let other people’s actions frustrate us, but the entire paradigm can change if we have empathy and understanding for them. If we change and are better people, the world will appear better. Kindness is at the heart of a healthy lifestyle, nurturing the body and mind. Small gestures can make all the difference, whether through small acts of service,

element of well-being is often overlooked — kindness. Doing nice things for others and

ourselves significantly impacts our overall health and happiness, impacting our emotional and physical well-being. It’s fitting that this month is also the time we observe World Kindness Week, seven days dedicated to the power of kindness and its many benefits.

Kindness has a ripple effect. When we serve others, it triggers the release of feel-good hormones in our brains, like serotonin and oxytocin. These happy hormones can help reduce stress, improve our moods, and even lower our blood pressure. A feeling of peace and calm just comes naturally when we do something kind for others. While it can be a challenge with all the rampant criticism around us, we can always choose kindness. It starts with a mindset shift. If you’re constantly looking for faults in people, for Heaven’s sake, you will find them. I try to hear everybody and understand their actions may be a defense mechanism or speak to an internal struggle I know nothing about. When you encounter someone’s unkindness, it can be tricky to face. I tend to think it’s my fault and start trying to figure out what I have done wrong. I try my

thoughtful words, or showing patience. By choosing kindness, you’re not just helping others but also taking a big step toward a better, healthier, happier you.

LEMON

Restaurants serve water with a wedge of fresh lemon for

a reason. Citrus fruits are among the most popular water additives thanks to their refreshing flavor and nutrients. Lemons are an excellent source

of vitamin C, which boosts your immune system. Adding lemon slices or juice to your water can help increase

your fluid intake and reduce the risk of specific health issues related to vitamin C deficiencies.

MAGNESIUM Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral that helps regulate blood sugar, maintain healthy blood pressure, regulate nerve and muscle function, and

support a wide variety of other bodily processes. You can add magnesium supplements, including flavored powders, to your water to reap the powerful benefits of this nutrient. Magnesium can also boost your mood, help you sleep better, and improve your exercise performance. GINGER Ginger’s spicy, warm flavor is great in teas and can transform your daily water intake. This root contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce swelling. It can also reduce pain, aid in digestion, decrease nausea, and help you heal from colds more quickly. People have used ginger for medicinal properties for thousands of years, and it’s a tasty way to drink more water. So, why settle for plain water when you can turn it into a wellness elixir? Incorporating these flavorful and health-boosting additives will make staying hydrated more enjoyable and support your overall well-being. Drink up!

QUESTION CORNER

What Features Should I Look for When Buying a Chair?

This month, we’re exploring some of the best features to consider when buying a massage chair for your home.

Q: What are my options for massage features? A: Most massage chairs offer multiple options for massage settings, locations, and varieties. Based on your unique goals for your massage chair, you should seek out massage features targeting your problem areas. You can opt for chairs featuring massagers on the legs, feet, or neck and shoulders. Chairs with rollers emulate the work of an actual masseuse and are effective for alleviating muscle tension and improving blood circulation. Other options include heated massage, zero gravity massage, and even Shiatsu massage. Q: Do chairs have adjustable settings?

TAKE A

BREAK

A: Most massage chairs on the market come built-in with options to adjust your massage’s intensity, speed, position, and length. Customization like this allows you more control and flexibility to better target specific body parts and your comfort preferences. As you look for the perfect chair for your needs, focus on options that let you control the settings. Typically, you can do that right on the remote, and the most common areas for adjustment are the airbags and rollers.

Q: Do I need a body scanning feature in a massage chair? A: Your massage chair doesn’t need body scan technology for an effective session, but it’s a great option to improve your results. A body scan feature, available on many current massage chairs, reads your body and customizes massages accordingly. This feature can give you a highly individualized routine adapted to your specific size and proportions. It’s especially helpful for beginners as they learn the chair. Q: Are there different sizes of massage chairs? A: Most massage chairs generally accommodate people from 5–7 feet tall and up to 280 pounds. So, if you fall in the average height range, almost any chair should fit your size well. However, you can find chairs designed with specific height or weight capacities outside the standard.
