NO MORE SAME- OLD TURKEY
How Our Family Keeps Thanksgiving Fresh
Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and in my family, that means it’s time to plan how we’re going to cook the turkey this year. Now, I know what you’re thinking — how many ways can you cook a turkey? Well, you’d be surprised! My family has started a new tradition for the past six years: We cook the turkey differently every year. That’s right — we change the method every Thanksgiving and try something new. It’s become one of my favorite parts of the holiday, and everyone looks forward to what the turkey will look (and taste) like each time! This all started when a friend let us borrow a special turkey cooker. We had always done the traditional method — turkey in the roaster, slow- cooked to perfection by late afternoon — but my friend suggested we try his turkey cooker, which is almost like a grill and smoker combo. I figured, why not? We tried it, and it was one of the best turkeys we ever had! The idea was born from there: Why not switch things every year? So, one year, we smoked the turkey, and the next, we fried it in oil. We’ve gone back to the roaster, but each year, we cook it differently than the previous year. The great thing about this tradition is that everyone in the family gets involved. There are always plenty of opinions on how we should cook the turkey — whether it’s fried, smoked, or roasted, someone’s favorite is always rotated
back on the menu. My wife, Gina, and I love it smoked, while our kids prefer fried or roasted. My oldest daughter would even rather have ham over turkey, so we always throw a spiral ham into the mix, too! As much as I love cooking the turkey, figuring out what we’ll do next is always a fun challenge. This year, we’re still deciding between frying or smoking, and I have a feeling there will be a lot of opinions from the kids. But that’s part of the fun — no matter how we prepare it, there’s always excitement leading up to the big meal. One of the best parts of Thanksgiving for me is the leftovers. I love watching my kids bicker over who gets the last bit of turkey or the best leftovers to take home. No matter how grown up they are, they still argue like they did when they were little! Gina and I usually moderate the leftovers “debate,” but as the turkey cook, I get first dibs. After that, we let the kids battle it out. It’s all in good fun, though, and it’s become a part of our Thanksgiving tradition that I secretly enjoy. Preparing the turkey is one of my favorite things about the holiday, and I always enjoy injecting spices and rubbing on seasonings to make it extra flavorful. Whether we’re using garlic,

butter, or a special rub, I love experimenting with different flavors each year. For me, it’s all about keeping it fresh and trying new ways to make the meal special. If you’ve got a favorite way to prepare your Thanksgiving turkey, I’d love to hear about it! Feel free to email me your go-to turkey tips — you never know, it might end up in the Garman family’s turkey rotation next year! Thanksgiving is all about traditions, and this one has brought our family closer together each year. We look forward to another fantastic meal and can’t wait to see how the turkey turns out this time! –Darin Garman

NBA PLAYERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON THIS SEASON Hoops and Hype
Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves: Edwards is not only one of the best players in the league but also one of the most entertaining, with a playstyle reminiscent of Michael Jordan. Watching him play will keep you on the edge of your seat from tip-off to the final shot. Luka Dončić, Dallas Mavericks: Already considered one of the best European basketball players of all time at age 25, Dončić should have another standout season after leading the Mavs to the NBA Finals last season. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics: Tatum led the Celtics to a championship last season but failed to get much playing time as a member of the USA’s Olympic gold-medal-winning team over the summer. Expect him to start the season with a bang to prove he should have been a starter at the Olympics.
The NBA season is officially underway. There’s always plenty of excitement at the beginning of a new season, and this year is no different. Will LeBron James win his fifth title? How will Steph Curry perform without Klay Thompson on the team? Will the 76ers finally live up to their hype after acquiring Paul George? We expect answers to these questions and more as the season progresses. If you’re wondering whom to pay attention to this season, we’ve got you covered. The following players are the ones to watch every time they’re on TV. LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers: LeBron has been a player to watch since he first entered the league over 20 years ago. He doesn’t have many playing years left, and this season, he has the opportunity to play side-by-side with his son, Bronny, giving us even more reason to pay attention to the King.
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs: After winning Rookie of the Year last season and earning Olympic silver with his home country, France, Wemby is on pace for an unbelievable sophomore season. If everything goes right, he could even enter the MVP conversation. Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers: Embiid finally beat out Nikola Jokić for the MVP last season but has yet to make the NBA Finals or Conference Finals in his career. Watch for him to put on a dominant performance this year to quiet the haters.
ARE YOU IN THE HUDDLE OR ON THE SIDELINES?
We are finally knee-deep into football season. As you know from my newsletters, this was recently my son Isaiah’s last year playing football and Gina’s and my last year of “kids activities.” We have been doing this with all three kids for over 25 years. My son Isaiah and I attended the Nebraska versus Northern Iowa game a couple of weeks ago, and it reminded me of the upcoming discounted real estate properties we will see in 2024 and will see big time in 2025. There will be investors who either get involved, decide to play the game and get in the huddle, or decide to watch from the sidelines. Which will you be as these
projects come up? Will ONLY the rich or the well- connected have the first shot at acquiring these properties? I have been around a long time and know this will happen. I’ve seen this before. Are you considering buying more apartment communities or, in the worst case, improving your existing ones?
will go by anyway. So, what will you do about it? Will you get in the game or sit on the sidelines?
Even if there is no huge discount on purchases, what do you think inflation will do? Just sit there and do nothing? We both know that is not the case and will not be the case, yet some of you are still sitting on the sidelines. So, as you sit there pondering this, ponder what your world could look like 10 years from now if you got aggressive about this. What could really happen for you and those you care about if you got serious? If you got off the sidelines and got in the game, got dirty, bruised even? You and I know it would be well worth it. I don’t know about you, but I think the future looks very bright for us, and I think it is FINALLY time for some of you to get in the huddle.
If not...why?
It does not take a Ph.D. in economics to see that the demand for housing will continue. This is not letting up. One of the biggest regrets apartment owners tell me is that they should have bought more units. I hear this ALL THE TIME. Of course, this is knowing what they know now, and many of them, having been involved for over 20 years, know they should have bought more and owned more. Don’t take this the wrong way. This is not some push from me to get you to contact me to help you buy more apartments. Not the case. It is my little wake-up call to you that the next 5, 10, 15 years
See you out there!

THE UNIQUE ALLURE OF BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Most national parks are full of visitors from spring through fall. Big Bend National Park turns that schedule upside down. The ideal time to visit this southwest Texas wonderland of wild river canyons and stunning mountain vistas is from October through May — the offseason for most national parks. But summertime temperatures in Big Bend soar to 105 degrees F or more, too hot for safe vacationing, while wintertime is mild and usually sunny. Many tourists and vacationers have recently discovered the park, driving visitation 16% higher since 2018 to more than 511,000 people annually.
Rio Grande River to almost 8,000 feet in the Chisos Mountains. Boating and rafting trips along the Rio Grande, which Congress designated as a free-flowing Wild & Scenic River, take visitors through the spectacular Santa Elena Canyon limestone cliffs. Options range from a leisurely float lasting less than a day to a seven-day wilderness adventure down the Lower Canyons. Big Bend is also a birder’s paradise, with 450 species sighted there on various occasions. The park also offers an abundance of family- friendly activities. A legal Port of Entry enables visitors who bring their passports to cross the Rio Grande River and visit the shops and restaurants of a rural Mexican village, Boquillas del Carmen. Families also enjoy stargazing at the Sotol Vista Overlook, scrambling over the
boulders on the Upper Burro Mesa, and trekking the Grapevine Hills trails to see Balanced Rock, a giant boulder seemingly teetering in midair between two smaller boulders. Kids can also see dinosaur remains at the Fossil Discovery Exhibit or explore the ruins of a mercury-mining ghost town, Terlingua. Five visitor centers are usually open through the winter. Construction of a new visitor lodge and water system will begin in late 2024, likely causing some disruptions. However, Big Bend has four developed campgrounds and many backcountry camping opportunities. Most campsites are filled six months in advance, so reserve a spot early for your winter camping adventure.
Big Bend offers a diversity of sights and terrain. Elevations soar from about 1,800 feet along the
