or three are gathered in my name.” The promise is for two. “Where two of you agree as touching anything ye shall ask.” There is strength, sympathy and fellowship in love’s labor for the Lord. “One can chase a thousand but two put ten thousand to flight.” The message was not to be theirs but His. “It is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you” (Matt. 10:20). And they were to begin with prayer lest the multitudes of unsaved should discourage them and un­ belief and indifference dissuade them. The message concerned the kingdom which was now to be proffered to the people, and the message was to Ihe accompanied with signs —proof of the inspiration of the message and of its. truth. How mightily God works when He has human hearts to love through and human lips to speak through and hu­ man lives to live through. No wonder that it is written that they returned with joy to testify to the mighty works wrought by Him who had sent them forth empower­ ed by the Spirit. Seventy is the number of completion multi­ plied by the perfect number. It corres­ ponds to the seventy elders of Israel, as twelve apostles to the twelve patriarchs. At Elim there are twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees, corresponding to the twelve patriarchs and seventy elders. They were sent before His face ; they represented Himself. He was the Light ; they were lights. They were to reflect His own life; He would follow them. What­ ever they did was to ible done in His name, upon His authority. They were to prepare the way for the manifestation of His per­ sonal presence. We are not sent in the place of Him, but to make the way for His coming. We are the “voice” of the herald—the hand that points. They were sent in pairs ; two were better than one, for if they fell the one would lift up his fellow, but woe unto him that is alone when he falleth. Two is the number of testimony. In the mouth of two or three witnesses every truth is established. Two is the smallest number that can be gathered. “Where two
