for evangelical services and undertook long cross-country colportage' service. Their center was later transferred to Sao Paulo. Here in three years a church of ISO con verts—all ex-Romanists—has been gathered together. In connection with it are nine established stations with workers in charge, and nearly 600 baptized converts. One of the native pastors, the late Samuel Mello of Paranagua, was perhaps the most re markable evangelist that Brazil has pro duced. At this time of Harvest Home in the land we love, let us be thankful for the “fields white to harvest” in the lands be yond the seas. Think for a moment of some of the things for which we may well be thankful. Total gifts last year, almost $2,000,000. In fourteen years the increase has been: Churches, from $315,000 to $706,000. Sunday schools, from $42,000 to $82,000. Women’s societies, from $305,000 to $400,- 000 . Young People’s Societies, from $3000 to $36,000. Gifts and pledges for the China Emer gency Fund to date, $385,000. And best of all, about forty men and women already offering their lives in re sponse to this special appeal. The work in Africa has forged ahead 1000 per cent, in seven years. Has any other investment you have made increased at such a rate ?—Assembly Herald, Presb. Mohammedanism disputes Christ’s con quest of the world. And it does this as does no other religion in the world. An American university graduate once said to Dr. S. M. Zwemer of Arabia that he did not think the latter had any right to con demn Mohammedanism so completely, and he asked how, if it was so unworthy, we could account for the marvelous progress it had made in the world. To which Dr. Zwemer replied that, as there was no way of accounting for the marvelous achieve ments of certain Christian leaders except as we added to their lives the plus sign,—

plus Jesus Christ,—so there was no way of accounting for Mohammedanism’s mighty achievements except as we added to it the plus sign,—plus. Satan. In each case a supernatural force has been at work, to carry the results far beyond any man’s power. And Satan has apparently found in Mohammedanism a better world-wide organized agency for opposing Christ than in any other movement since Christianity began. We have found the Sr. Navarro, one of our members whom we are instructing as a native worker, and his wife, a great help and great encouragement in these days. He seems to be growing daily in his faith, his studies and in his power to instruct and speak. The first part of July he was out on a trip selling Bibles and Testaments. He met much opposition and fanaticism in the parts visited. Turned out of his road by some one who wished to deceive him, he wandered for a day among the mountains without anything to eat when he finally came upon a home where he found a priest who was traveling among the people selling indulgences. Ac cording to his promise all who bought were pardoned .from all sin during a pe riod of from twenty to fifty years, accord ing to the price paid. The family was crowning the priest with a crown of flow ers. In the presence of the family the Sr. Navarro Ibegan telling him about his deeds and the teachings of the Bible, which re sulted in his becoming very angry and destroying his crown in the presence of the family.— Medellin, Colombia. The fields white for the harvest, but laborers too many, is not what Jesus said when He was here in the flesh. Think of 167,000 ministers, plus the thousands of priests, lecturers, evangelists, singers, choirs, Sunday schools and missionaries. One minister for every 450, to say noth ing about the rest of the Lord’s army of servants. Think of one minister in our foreign fields for every 1,000,000. We won der why young men don’t take to the min-
