RNSH Surgery & Anaesthesia Research Activity Report 21-22

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the research activity undertaken by clinicians in the Division of Surgery and Anaesthesia (DoSA) at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) for 2021 to 2022. This is a follow-up from the inaugural research report published in 2020 which documented the research output of all surgical departments. Following consultation with the DoSA, we have expanded the coverage of the report to encompass the Anaesthesia Department (including Allergy Clinic and Acute Pain Management), Intensive Care Unit and the Trauma Service. At the centre of every clinician's work is a commitment to enhancing care in pursuit of optimal patient outcomes. Within the DoSA, research includes the exploration of novel medical and surgical methodologies and techniques, collaborative translational investigations, and the improvement of existing practices through rigorous data analysis and clinical audits. The approach used to produce this report involved a systematic search of peer-reviewed publications authored by RNSH clinicians followed by direct correspondence with the Heads of Departments and Academic Leads to ensure completeness. Each department was also asked to provide additional details regarding current research activities, including involvement with laboratory-based projects and or supervision of higher degree research. This report highlights the significant volume of research activity and peer-reviewed publications within the DoSA throughout 2021-2022. During this period, a total of 590 manuscripts were published, averaging 295 publications per year. Several departments have also demonstrated a strong focus on translational research, maintaining close affiliations with laboratories within the Kolling Building and external to RNSH, as well as collaborations with local and international universities. The Research Activity Report is a dynamic document and will be updated annually to reflect new research activity and publications.

I hope you enjoy this report and uncovering some of the remarkable research achievements undertaken at RNSH.
