Leannovation Leannovation is Public Works’ very own Lean Continuous Improvement program that makes work smoother, more engaging and less of a struggle. By focusing on small, daily improvements, Leannovation encourages everyone to “fix what bugs you” while developing our people and enhancing teamwork. It’s not just about streamlining processes, but empowering our teams to create a better workplace. This approach fosters a culture where everyone feels encouraged to contribute, innovate and elevate Public Works operations to deliver better services to the community. 2024 Highlights • This year, Leannovation soared to new heights! We celebrated more than 70 staff earning White Belts, nine advancing to Yellow Belts and seven achieving Green Belt certifications . • Our Leannovators implemented more than 160 improvements across Public Works, resulting in 3,950 hours of freed-up capacity and achieving $1.3 million in cost savings and avoidance !
Standout projects • Horticulture Dust Suppression : Roads East team repurposed waste (asphalt grindings) to reduce dust, improving air quality, safety and plant health while saving $24,000 . • Water Billing Automation : Environmental Services streamlined water billing with Qlik Sense dashboards, saving 354 hours annually . • Road Services Vending Solution : Roads Operations East introduced a vending system for consumables, saving $24,759 yearly . • Soccer Field Marking Innovation : Parks Operations East piloted durable markers, reducing setup time by 50 per cent , set to roll out city-wide in 2025. • Corporate Tree Planting : Urban Forestry outsourced to TRCA, saving 240 staff hours and improving tree survival.
