Playing Rugby requires a good bit of craziness: you run for 80 minutes, its full contact with no pads, and when you weigh 170 pounds and have to go against an opponent weighing 280…there isn’t any other way to describe it. And yet, it is the most fun I’ve ever had playing a sport. Growing up I was blessed to watch my dad play rugby for Philadelphia-Whitemarsh Rugby Club, which allowed him to travel the world. By the time I got to college, I had tried ever afterschool activity from lacrosse to theater, but I knew as soon as I got the opportunity I would follow in my dad’s footsteps and head to the rugby pitch. I ended up playingfour-years of collegiate rugby for Ursinus College, captainingmy senior year, and came back to help coach after graduating. Every year we come back together and participate in the annual Alumni Rugby match, raising money for the current squad. Playing in that match annually has allowed me to not only stay connected to my former teammates, but gives me the opportunity to share some of the cutting-edge prevention exercises used in the clinic at Advance with the current players to keep them injury-free. I look forward to continuing the tradition each year and even getting the opportunity to play side-by-side with my dad on occasion. Although as I get older I keep thinking I’ll be the one who ends up on the treatment table next!
