Introduction
Outstanding academic health care and research institutions are built upon a strong foundation of a talented, vibrant, diverse, collaborative faculty, who experience a powerful sense of belonging to a community with a shared purpose. The Department of Pediatrics of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine strives to create that community of faculty, with the shared purpose of improving child health, by 1) supporting the academic career advancement of individual faculty members across the career continuum, and 2) fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, trust, and mutual respect. The appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure criteria described in this document were designed to align with these two principles and to be inclusive of the full spectrum of faculty activities. This document provides guidance about appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure criteria by track and rank in the Department of Pediatrics . The criteria generally follow the guidelines for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) serves as the Department of Pediatrics for the College of Medicine. Faculty appointments through the Department of Pediatrics are affiliated faculty appointments with the College of Medicine. Affiliated faculty are employees of the affiliated institution. The University of Cincinnati is not responsible for affiliated faculty salaries or employment. Acknowledgement of the faculty member’s affiliation to the College of Medicine on all scholarly works . Please note that a requirement for reappointment and/or promotion for all affiliate faculty appointments will be the acknowledgement of the faculty member’s affiliation to the College of Medicine on all scholarly works and/or publications. Tenure and non-tenure tracks. Affiliated faculty in the College of Medicine may receive a faculty appointment in the tenure track and may receive a tenure designation. However, a tenure designation does not confer a specific or lifetime term of employment. Because the College of Medicine is not the employer of affiliated faculty, the College of Medicine considers tenured affiliate faculty appointments to mean only that as long as the faculty member is employed by the affiliate institution, the faculty member will not be required to submit for reappointment of their faculty title. Tracks are organized into tenure (Clinical Investigator Tenure, Research Tenure, and Education Tenure) and non- tenure (Clinical, Research, Educator, Field Service, Adjunct, and Volunteer). Faculty are equally valued in all tracks, and the tenure and non-tenure tracks should be seen as co-equal. Faculty who choose to be less than full-time with full professional effort at CCHMC in the non-tenure track, either at the time of their initial appointment or later in their career, will stay in their appointed faculty track unless their status falls below 0.5 FTE. Faculty who are less than 0.5 FTE will be switched to the Adjunct track. Criteria for appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure. For each track, a description is provided, followed by criteria for appointment, reappointment, promotion, and (if applicable) tenure. Criteria are organized into the following categories: research and scholarly activities; clinical service; teaching and mentoring; service, leadership and management; and professionalism. Criteria are categorized as required and supportive. In general, all required criteria should be met to merit promotion, and achievement of one or more supportive criteria is encouraged. However, individual faculty members have different responsibilities and skills
