Description

The Research Track is appropriate for faculty who focus their professional effort in the area of research, either as principal investigator or in a collaborative role. Research activities are augmented by mentorship and educational activities; service to the institution and/or professional field; and clinical activities, if applicable. It is expected that a substantial proportion of effort will be funded through research support, and if applicable, administrative positions and/or clinical service. Research Track faculty demonstrate excellence in research, which may include basic, translational, clinical, clinical trials, health care improvement, community-engaged, health disparities, biostatistical, or biomedical informatics research. Faculty in this track are expected to conduct high-quality research which is, or has the potential to be, externally funded. Independent research is valued and encouraged, but not expected, in this track. Given that interdisciplinary team activities are increasingly recognized as important to the future of biomedical science, participation or leadership in collaborative research/team science, and/or as the director of a core research service that supports other investigators, are also highly valued in the promotion process. In addition, it is well-recognized that collaboration between academic and community partners can enhance translation of scientific knowledge for clinical and community programs; therefore, the efforts of faculty working with community organizations to improve public health are also valued. Research Track faculty are expected to seek and receive sustained and substantial support from internal or external sources as a principal investigator, a co-investigator or in other key roles. Although external support from sources such as the NIH is encouraged, given the diversity of sources of research funding (i.e. foundations, industrial contracts, philanthropic support), the collective funding that a faculty member secures to sustain salary support and research programs from all sources will be considered during evaluation. Faculty in this track are expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Publication in high-impact journals, participation in national meetings and symposia, and invitations to give seminars and serve on workshop panels are indicative of a successful research program and reputation in the field. A requirement for reappointment and/or promotion for all ranks in this track will be the acknowledgement of the faculty member’s affiliation to the College of Medicine on all scholarly works and/or publications. It is expected that those in the Research Track will become recognized leaders in the College of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics, and will have an impact beyond the institution in their research area. Research Track faculty are expected to participate in the educational mission of the institution, providing teaching and/or mentorship within the Department of Pediatrics or the College of Medicine. Clinicians in this track are expected to provide high-quality patient care, achieving excellent patient outcomes and recognition of their clinical expertise. Service in support of the institution and profession is also expected in this track. Interprofessional collaboration contributes to the advancement of teaching, research, service, and clinical practice, and therefore will be considered in the reappointment and promotion process.
