Tenure Eligibility

Eligible for Tenure

The Educator Tenure Track is appropriate for faculty who focus their professional effort in the areas of education and educational scholarship. They will typically be clinical faculty who devote a considerable amount of effort to student, resident, graduate student, and/or fellow education in classroom or clinical settings. Faculty in this track often develop and lead educational or training programs and may sustain program accreditation. Examples of clinical faculty who may qualify for this track include student clerkship directors, residency program directors, and fellowship program directors. Successful progression through the Educator Tenure Track (and what distinguishes this track from the non-tenure Educator track) requires educational innovation, publication of scholarly work, and grant funding that supports educational scholarly activities and/or training programs that advance the educational mission. Faculty on the Educator Tenure Track are expected to demonstrate commitment to educational scholarship through participation in original educational research, rigorous program evaluation, descriptions of standardized curricula, etc. A requirement for reappointment and/or promotion for all ranks in this track will be the acknowledgement of the faculty member’s affiliation to the College of Medicine on all scholarly works and/or publications. It is expected that a substantial proportion of effort will be funded through educational service, clinical service, external funding, and/or administrative positions. Faculty members in the Educator Tenure Track are recognized as excellent teachers, as demonstrated by a sustained record of individual teaching in courses and/or in clinical settings and by outstanding teaching evaluations. They are expected to play an active role in mentoring and develop a record of high-quality mentoring. Faculty in this track are expected to develop and introduce novel and/or state of the art teaching, learning or evaluation methods, rather than simply direct an existing program. Given that interdisciplinary team activities are increasingly recognized as important to the future of biomedical science, participation or leadership in collaborative/team scholarly activities are valued in the promotion process. In addition, it is well-recognized that collaboration between academic and community partners can enhance translation of scholarly activity for community programs; therefore, the efforts of faculty working with community organizations to improve education are also valued, provided that such efforts are corroborated by peer-reviewed publications. Interprofessional collaboration contributes to the advancement of teaching, research, service, and clinical practice, and therefore will be considered in the reappointment, promotion and tenure process. Faculty in the Educator Tenure Track are expected to act in a professional manner in their interactions with students, trainees, patients, families and colleagues. They are expected to maintain a high standard of ethics in research. Tenure is granted in recognition that the faculty member has fulfilled in a preeminent fashion the qualities of a scholar and has demonstrated excellence in research, mentoring, teaching, service and leadership. Significant and sustained funding for scholarly educational work is a primary criterion for the granting of tenure. A substantial record of high-quality, high-impact, peer-reviewed publications is also expected. Tenure is only granted if the faculty member serves as a role model in acting in a professional manner in interactions with patients and families, colleagues, and trainees, and maintains a high standard of ethics in research.
