Tenure Eligibility

Eligible for Tenure

Description

The Research Tenure Track is appropriate for faculty who focus their professional effort in the area of research, as a principal investigator. They demonstrate excellence in research, which may include basic, translational, clinical, health care improvement, community-engaged, health disparities, biostatistical, or biomedical informatics research. They may also participate in clinical trials or other investigations that lead to the translation of intellectual property into potentially commercially viable products. These faculty members are responsible for developing and directing independent, focused, significant, innovative, and externally funded research programs, and are expected to be recognized leaders in their fields. The quality and productivity of the faculty member’s research program are judged by several indicators, including the faculty member’s ability to serve as a project leader as principal or co-principal investigator; ongoing publication of reports in high-impact peer-reviewed journals; and sustained and substantial grant support from external sources. Investigator- initiated, peer-reviewed grants from federal sources have traditionally been the primary source of such funding. However, given the increasing diversity of sources of research funding (i.e. foundations, industrial contracts, philanthropic support), the collective funding that a faculty member secures to sustain their salary support and research program from all sources will be considered during evaluation. It is expected that a substantial proportion (i.e. a majority) of effort will be funded through external grant support. A requirement for reappointment and/or promotion for all ranks in this track will be the acknowledgement of the faculty member’s affiliation to the College of Medicine on all scholarly works and/or publications. Given that interdisciplinary team activities are increasingly recognized as important to the future of biomedical science, participation or leadership in collaborative research/team science are valued in the promotion process. In addition, it is well-recognized that collaboration between academic and community partners can enhance translation of scientific knowledge for clinical and community programs; therefore, the efforts of faculty working with community organizations to improve public health are also valued. Faculty members in the Research Tenure Track are also expected to be actively engaged in the teaching and training programs of the Department and/or their discipline, and are expected to play an active role in mentoring. Recognition as an excellent teacher and mentor is important. They are also expected to provide service in support of the institution and profession. Interprofessional collaboration contributes to the advancement of teaching, research, and service, and therefore will be considered in the reappointment, promotion and tenure process. Faculty in the Research Tenure Track are expected to act in a professional manner in their interactions with students, trainees, and colleagues. They are expected to maintain a high standard of ethics in research. Tenure is granted in recognition that the faculty member has fulfilled in a preeminent fashion the qualities of a scholar and has demonstrated excellence in research, mentoring, teaching, service and leadership. Significant, continuous, and sustained funding from multiple sources and/or funding by competitive, peer-reviewed grants from federal sources is a primary criterion for the granting of tenure. A sustained record of high-quality, high- impact, peer-reviewed publications is also expected. Tenure is only granted if the faculty member serves as a role model in acting in a professional manner in interactions with patients and families, colleagues, and trainees,
