OUR HOBBIES MAKE US HAPPY

Now Is a Great Time to Discover Yours Having a hobby you enjoy has numerous benefits, including

anything you find remotely interesting — it could be reading, watching movies, or even drinking wine. Then get out there and start trying activities associated with those interests. You could

lower stress levels and a sense of purpose. As we age, it becomes increasingly important to find a meaningful hobby. If you’ve recently retired or emptied your nest, or social distancing is still important to your health and safety, you probably need something engaging to fill your time. Many people assume

join a book club, start a movie review blog, and subscribe to a monthly wine tasting delivery. Try all three, and one might really capture you. Be willing to think

that starting new hobbies when you’re older is too difficult, so I’m here to tell you that’s not the case at all! We have many ways to discover our next great hobby adventure. USE WHAT YOU KNOW. If your concern is finding something you consider to be hobby-worthy, chances are you enjoy something that can be transformed into a full-fledged hobby. Start by asking yourself what you like to do for

outside the box, but also be willing to accept that not everything you try will be a slam dunk. Just don’t give up — put yourself out there, make connections, and find a perfect fit. TAKE AN ASSESSMENT. People tend to enjoy hobbies that appeal to their own unique

fun. If you enjoy eating, start a cooking hobby. If you enjoy watching sports, consider joining a recreational team. If you love spending time with your dog or cat, try volunteering with a rescue organization. You’re likely already doing something you love, so why not find a way to adapt it into something you can do even more? REDISCOVER YOUR CHILDHOOD. Think back to before your adult life got in the way of all the activities you loved as a child. Before you had to work, raise kids, and maintain a home, what did you enjoy doing? Was it finger-painting masterpieces for the fridge? Was it going to summer camp? Maybe you even loved digging in the dirt looking for rocks. You can use what you used to know to create a hobby, too! The above examples could lead to hobbies related to art, hiking, camping, or rock collecting. Find a childhood joy you once had and morph it to fit your life now. SEE WHAT STICKS. If you just can’t decide what your interests or likes are, then it’s time to try throwing a few things at the wall to see what sticks. Think of

personalities and interests. That’s why various hobbies appeal to some people and hold no interest for others. That’s also why researchers were able to create personality assessments specifically catered to figuring out which

hobbies are suited to various personalities. Tests like the Strong Interest Inventory will help you identify your key interests, and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator can give you deeper insight into your personality, which can better align you with hobbies you’ll enjoy. Don’t be afraid to seek outside guidance on which hobbies would appeal to you most. Our hobbies can be just as important for living a happy and fulfilling life as the work we do or the family we raise. They connect us with others, challenge us, keep us entertained, and bring meaning to our days. There’s never a right or wrong time to discover a new hobby, so dive in and get started. –Dr. Chris Garner

CELEBRATING CHUCK RANSEAR

Grand Strand’s Patient of the Month

Even though holistic health and wellness can be a lifetime commitment, it doesn’t take long to see the positive results. If anyone proves that to be the case, it’s Chuck Ransear, a patient of ours who hasn’t even been coming to Grand Strand Health and Wellness for a year yet, and has already experienced relief from his neck and lumbar pain. Chuck has always been a hardworking guy. He started his career by serving in the U.S. Navy and then worked in the steel industry for several years doing various jobs. After he retired, he and his wife decided to move to the Myrtle Beach area from Thousand Island, New York. They have three children and two grandchildren. Chuck’s appointments at our office aren’t the only way he’s positively impacted his health since moving to Myrtle Beach — he’s also lost more than 50 pounds! It helps that he’s always been an athletic individual, who loves getting exercise while doing his favorite activities. He’s out on the local golf course several times a week! Everyone on our team is pretty sure we know the real secret to Chuck’s weight-loss success, though. Every time he visits our office, he brings all sorts of goodies with him to share with us. That way, he won’t be tempted to eat them himself! Of course, we’ll never say no to The Fountain of Youth

anything Chuck brings us, and Jackie, one of our front desk rock stars, wants to thank him personally for the “extra insulation for the winter.”

All in all, we love Chuck’s sense of humor, his enthusiasm for health, and his giving heart. We look forward to continuing to help Chuck on his journey toward better lumbar and neck comfort and toward greater holistic health in general. Thank you for your service to our country, Chuck, and thank you for ensuring there is never a dull moment in the office when you’re around!

Vaccines have been the light at the end of this long, dark tunnel we call the COVID-19 pandemic, but scientists don’t yet have a full picture of the virus or its treatments. In an effort to better understand the coronavirus, researchers are looking at how medical professionals can better treat our most vulnerable populations or prevent them from ever contracting COVID-19. Experts have long feared that a COVID-19 vaccine may not help the older adults who need it most, as these individuals are often more at risk of contracting the disease and having a weakened immune system. However, some researchers hypothesize that anti-aging medications may boost the effectiveness of the vaccine for older adults, and there are some promising results from early studies.

lifespan of fruit flies and mice. Anti-aging expert Jan Mannick explains that researchers think mTOR may contribute to failing immune systems in humans, so blocking the production of this protein could drastically improve the success rate of a COVID-19 vaccine in older adults. As promising as these results and many other studies are, medical experts are quick to remind the public that more research is needed to understand the possible link between anti-aging medications and their effects on the efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine in older adults. These medications include treatments that indirectly affect aging like some diabetes medication. The good news is that you don’t have to wait for researchers to find a “miracle pill” to boost your immunity. Incorporate natural remedies into your routine instead! Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and other foods rich in vitamin D that boost your immune system —

like salmon, mushrooms, and greens — and remember to drink plenty of water. While you’re at it, wear sunscreen to prevent the sun from aging your skin prematurely and increasing your chance of having other health issues. It’s important to stay optimistic and do what we can with what we know now while researchers work toward an effective vaccine.

One study published in Nature found that a drug that limited the creation of the protein mTOR lengthened the

“For the last three years, I have had severe diabetic neuropathy in my right leg. When I started the treatment, I did not know what to expect, but after three treatments, the result was better than I expected. The ladies in the office were very informative and let me know, through every step, what was going to happen. I had only been to a neurologist before, and when I came here, they did not detect any abnormalities in my spine. It is well worth the cost to have this done, and I liked all the treatments. I would recommend Dr. Garner and his staff, and I would like to thank them all for their help.” –Patrick McLear

You’re Building Muscle While You Rest

RELAX A LITTLE

February is the month when many of us give up on New Year’s resolutions. We lose motivation, or life simply gets in the way. If you find yourself sitting on the couch more than you did in January, when you may have been actively pursuing your fitness goals, consider this permission to sit a little while longer: Rest days are good for you! Here’s why. Your body needs to move. Exercise has many benefits, but from a survival standpoint, exercise and movement help your body perform daily functions with ease. But that’s not when your body gets stronger. It’s actually on the days you choose to rest that your muscles and joints improve as a result of your exercise. Exercising creates tiny tears in your muscles. (Maybe that’s why it burns so much!) In the regeneration process — aka your rest days — the muscle is built back stronger than it was before. That’s why incorporating rest days into your workouts ensures you can climb up from 5 to 10 to 15 pounds for dumbbell curls or run more miles in a faster time than last week! Beyond the improvement and fitness goals you have, rest days can also be essential to preventing injuries. Your body won’t become overworked, and your muscles get the necessary respite they need. Fatigue won’t set in as quickly,

and you will find that you can do more as you properly incorporate rest days into your schedule.

Fitting rest days into your daily

routine is easier than you may think, but it sadly doesn’t involve

sitting on the couch for too long. You should always find a way to move at least once each day.

If you want to try running, start out by running three days each week. On your “off” days, incorporate some yoga, go for a leisurely walk, or focus on your arms and shoulders. This gives your legs and core a break from running while you still get the benefits of movement. (Plus, on the days you run, you will get a break from yoga or weightlifting!) It’s okay if you haven’t met your resolution goals just yet, but don’t give up! Find a way to add more rest into your routine, and you just might be more invigorated than ever before.
