TRIPS & EXPEDITIONS
We were split into two groups. Half of us went off to do a fish dissection whilst the other half went on a guided tour of the aquarium itself. The fish dissection was taken by the staff at the aquarium, and revolved around finding the features of a mackerel that enable it to inhabit the ocean, such as its scales, fins, tail and, most importantly, gills. Then there was the tour. The aquarium backs onto Plymouth Harbour, and has an entire room dedicated to the marine life that can be found in or just outside the neighbouring bay. It was really interesting to see just what lived off-shore, and we were surprised by a few species that looked far too exotic for the west coast. The star attraction was undoubtedly the shark tank. The biggest in the UK, it houses several species of shark including 2.5m lemon shark, sand tiger sharks, nurse sharks, the only spotted eagle rays in Europe, sting rays, and even a green turtle! Having studied the requirements for human life at the Eden Project, it was interesting to see what survival in a whole different realm was like, and the aquarium did a great job of showing us. So all in all, a very successful end to a very successful trip! Day 3: Plymouth Aquarium James Lord
