PARTNERSHIP, COMMUNITY AND LIFELONG LEARNING

Time to think internationally

From its origins in 2010, the Symposium, a day of cross-curricular enquiry on a single theme, has become a feature of life at the College, with the Upper School Symposium now in its ninth year, and the Junior School developing the idea in partnership with JAPS. This year, two of the international schools have taken up the idea, with DC Singapore and DC Seoul joining the Junior School in exploring the theme of Time. Here, three of the teachers who organised the events celebrate these days of off-timetable learning

O ur third Junior School Symposium (our second in collaboration with James Allen’s Prep School) was a great success, with children mingling across both schools for the day. Teachers from both Junior and Senior Schools, as well as outside speakers and performers for the headline events, offered a range of challenging, thought- provoking sessions for all. By the end of the day, every child had experienced a range of challenges, exploring time through thinking, problem-solving, discussion, debate, analysis, evaluation and creativity. Drumming at JAPS and speed-stacking at Dulwich College were particularly enjoyed by the participants, the latter quite possibly inspired by the short clip of a champion speed-stacker who is a pupil at Dulwich College Singapore! It is a delight to see the way in which the Symposium is strengthening links with other schools in the Dulwich College community around the world through the inaugural events in Singapore and Seoul. Short films created by talented crews in each school were shared, so that the children could connect with their peers across the globe. This growing bond around such an exciting initiative is something I know we all wish to develop further over the next few years.
