FREE LEARNING

THREE YEAR 8 BOYS REFLECT ON THE DAY’S ACTIVITIES

We discussed refugees and asylum seekers, those who are homeless and those who have a home

I was lucky enough to work with Twinkle Troughton, a painter based in Margate. First of all, Twinkle told us about her background and the inspirations for her art. Then we were able to view three of her oil paintings, which were absolutely beautiful and had amazing concentration of detail, as well as containing stories within them that we spotted, some of which she said she herself hadn’t realised were there! In the next part of the workshop we explored the theme of migration and movement through poetry, led by Ms Akrill. We discussed refugees and asylum seekers, those who are homeless and those who have a home, writing a few lines which would become our inspiration for the collage that we would be creating later.

We then went to the Wodehouse Library where we chose photos and finalised the design of our collage. This is where Twinkle helped us the most. My design was centred on the word ‘home’. I used photos representing both homelessness and those having a home. Once we had enough material we returned to the studio to create our collages. I am very happy with my end product, and am even happier about the amazing learning experience I had with Twinkle. It was a very inspiring day.
