DRAMA

Telling Porkies An original drama

Catherine Ibbotson

Y ear 12 Drama and Theatre pupils staged their very own morality play with a film-noir re-working of the notorious tale of the Three Little Pigs. Their original drama, Telling Porkies , took us into the world of a group of hard-nosed gumshoe detectives who then transformed into garish game-show hosts as they unravelled the events leading up to the murders of Hamlet and Eisenhowler in the rundown Haybail estate. Influenced by anarchic and playful Kneehigh theatrical techniques the boys created a myriad of characters and caricatures multi-rolling to great effect. We were invited to engage in Paul Porke’s gruesome fate following the accusations relating to his own brothers’ murder. Here, with tensions between wolves and pigs at an all-time high, the game-show hosts raised the stakes, using the spinning Wheel of Fortune to determine the grand guignol-style death in store for the hapless pig. Interspersed with live music, composed specially by the ensemble, and slick choreographed dance routines, the piece dazzled and charmed, with audience interaction adding to its playful nature. This was an original, hilarious and inventive piece, with accomplished performances from all.
