enter in, and shall not be able.” The word “many” should be noticed par ticularly and compared with such pas sages as Matthew 7:13; 7:22, 23; 20:16; 2 Peter 2:2. Jesus said there was just one en trance, and that a narrow one. To pass that entrance would requirfe striving—not because it is difficult for people to enter, but because it is impossible for people to enter with what'they desire to take with them. The entrance is too narrow to admit any trust in riches (cf. Mk. 10:17-22); too narrow to admit any careless or riotous living in pleasure (1 Cor. 6:9, 10); and too narrow to admit anything. with the taint of sin (cf. Rev. 21:27). The gate is barred to anything con trary to the holiness of God. But it is wide enough to admit any soul who will come in God’s appointed" way. Perhaps the most common cause of failure to enter in is the supposedly innocent evil of prbcrastination. The division o f the verses here (vs. 24, 25) is unfortunate. Without any division, the passage reads, and should read, “Many . . . shall seek to enter in, and shaU not be able when once the mas ter of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door." Any time before the door is shut, all who will may en ter; once the door IS shut, none may enter. Procrastination is not only the thief of time, but also of the eternal welfare of the soul. “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep; so shall thy poverty come” (Prov. 6:10, 11). When the door is shut, there will be many who intended sometime to enter, but who will stand outside and beg that the door, be opened to them (vs. 25-28). They will plead that they ' knew the Lord, that He' had been in their midst, and had taught in their streets. But He will dedlare He does not know them, and will accuse them of being “workers of-iniquity.” None of their evil deeds are mentioned, but it is enough to remember that they despised Christ’s offer of entrance, . they rejected His teaching, and finally they found the door shut against them. ' Outside there would be weeping, doubtless because of disappointment; and gnashing of teeth, because of an ger. Peoples from every quarter would be seen inside, while they would be shut out. They had been the first, with the first opportunity to enter,

We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27 But he shall say, 1 tell .you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28 There shall be weeping and gnash ing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. * 30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first; and there are first which shall be last. 31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee oiitr and depart hence; for Herod will kill thee. 32 And he said unfo them, Go ye, and tell 4that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and 1 do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. 33 Nevertheless I must w a l k today, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. . 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kill- est the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood u n d e r her wings, and ye would not! 35 Behold, your house is left untò you desolate: and yerlly I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
