4. His Was the Cup “Take away this cup from me” (Mk. 14:36). What then was this mysterious cup? It was the cup of man’s guilt and sin. It was the cup of God’s penalty upon sin. Christ was made sin on our be half. He tasted death for every man. That was the cup from which Christ in His human nature drank,- and which He prayed might pass away from Him.- * 1■ Christ won His victory in His Geth- semane by complete and trusting sur render to the will of God. “Take away this cup from me,” He prayed. “Never theless, »not as I will, but as ■thou wilt.” That is the secret of victory in Gethsemane, difficult, hard; yet sim ple, true, infallible. —Clarence Edward Macartney. A Sweet-Smelling Savor “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given him self for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor” (Eph. 5:2). In the Old Testament offerings, there were three offerings for a sweet fragrance: the burnt, meat, and peace offerings. In the savor offerings, the offerer came for acceptance as a wor shiper. The incense was also for fragrance. The morning and evening were special times for replenishipg the incense, but a perpetual fragrance ascended from the altar. . . . We are to. be a sweet savor of Christ, and we may be as we yield our whole being to the control of the Holy Spirit. —Selected. 6. The Blessing of His Absence “And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus” (Lk. 24:3). Oh, the anguish of Mary, the depth of despair, When she came to the tomb and the Lord was not there! As she desolate stood with her balm and her myrrh, And His winding sheet only was wait ing for her! Oh, the blackness of death, oh, life’s utter despair, Had she come to the' tomb and the Lord had been there, Lying wrapped in the sheet with the balm and the myrrh, And no risen Redeemer had waited for her! —Sunday School Times. 5.

1. Open Windows "And when Daniel knew .that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem); and he kneeled upon his knees three limes a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime” (Dan. 6:10, R. V.). Today, when so many are neglect ing prayer and Bible study and when others in war-ridden lands are forced to worship God in secret for fear of their very lives, it is refreshing to re call the ever-faithful Daniel, who, even though he knew that King Darius had issued a decree forbidding the people to ask a petition of any god or man for thirty ¿days save of himself, went into his house and prayed, . . as he did aforetime.”—^Selected. "Have Faith in God'* “And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God” (Mk. 11:22). Doubt sees'the obstacles— Faith sees the way! Doubt sees the darkest night— Faith sees the day! Doubt dreads to take a step— Faith soars on high, Doubt questions—“Who believes?” Faith ansivers—“I!” • —F. M. N. 3. Crucified with Christ “Knowing this, that our old man ,is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that hence forth we should not serve sin”' (Rom. 6 : 6 ). How different Christ was from us! He was perfect, yet He took that per fect human nature to the cross, and allowed that specially prepared body to be nailed there. He was flesh and blood plus God. We are flesh and blood plus Sin. . . . Human nature is the same in all ages; therefore it was our human nature that the soldiers nailed to the cross and crucified. . . . When our Lord identified Himself $vith us, He put our “old man” out of the way by death.—A. R. Boughen. Have you risen with Christ, beloved? O’er the world and all its sin? Do you know the mighty power Of the Christ enthroned within? Are you living in the fullness Of His resurrection life? Are you safe in His pavilion From all evil and all strife? 2.
