Meet Our Newest Faculty Member: Noman Hossain

Noman Hossain arrived at CWU in September of 2021, after completing his Ph.D. in Finance at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. “When I got the interview call from CWU, I noticed how friendly people here are, and I felt that CWU was the best place for me. After I got in here, I could really feel that friendly, welcoming working environment, which is very important to me.” That phone call heralded the start of Hossain’s time as assistant professor of finance at CWU’s College of Business, and the next step in a career that began at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2010. As he’s had the opportunity to settle into his professorship here in Ellensburg, Hossain has found that the environment is perfect for progressing his own research, in addition to instructing his students.

Hossain’s research is focused on corporate finance; specifically, how CEOs' personality traits and behavioral characteristics like marital status and political ideology affect firms' cor - porate policy choices. He has presented this research with his collaborators at conferences across the country. “My coworkers conduct research in many of the same fields as me, so the prospect of future research collaborations with them was also a factor in my decision to join CWU,” Hossain said. “The ability to consult my peers, along with the university’s excellent database access, is going to be important in my work here.” In his classes, Hossain emphasizes the impor - tance of proactive thinking and proper planning in establishing a career right out of college. “In a lot of the undergraduate classes I teach, I ask my students what their plan is after gradu - ation, to which most of them respond that they will be searching for a job after graduation,” Hossain said. “I always recommend starting your search for that job a year before you grad- uate, to avoid having to wait a couple of years to enter the market properly.” Hossain approaches instruction from a flexible perspective, knowing that his students come from many different walks of life, and varying levels of familiarity with the world of finance. His own experiences have helped foster this understanding. “My journey, coming here from a foreign country and having to learn English, and speak it with an accent that those around me can understand, has occasionally been difficult,” Hossain said. “The community here is very helpful. My favorite thing about Ellensburg is how friendly the people are. The struggles I’ve faced during my journey to CWU have helped me grow and persevere.”
