AP council takes first steps for sports dome project

There’s one in Orléans and in Alexandria, and soon Russell Townshipwill have one. NowAlfred-Plantagenet Township council has decided that this municipality could benefit fromhaving its ownmulti-use com- munity sports dome. Township council has taken the first steps towards launching a community sports dome project, during its Aug. 8meeting, with approval of a change to the development charges bylaw. The change will increase the development charge levied on all new residential development permit application, from the current $3286.37 to $4590.19. A portion of the new residential devel- opment charge increase will go towards a proposed $1.5 million budget fund for a multi-use sports dome. Marc Daigneault, township chief administrator, reported dur- ing a later interview that the municipality has several potential partners interested in the project. “We already have partners,” Daigneault said, citing le Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est d’ontarien (CSDCEO), which has told the township it could accom- modate a sports dome at the site of l’École secondaire catholique de Plantagenet. The CSDCEO noted in its offer that pro- viding space on the school grounds for a sports dome would fit under the new pro- vincial government policy to allow school districts to use their facilities to help create community hubs. Right now the entire sports dome project is in the early stage.The changes to the local development charges bylaw are set aside for now as part of the required 40-day appeal period. If there are no objections by mid to late September then the amendment bylaw will go for final acceptance. Meanwhile township staff is starting work on finding other sources of funding sup- port for the project, including provincial and federal government grants, and also contacting local community groups for ei- ther support or help with the fundraising. Daigneault expects the fundraising portion of the project will be a top-priority item for council and staff during the next few years.

“It is a beautiful project,” Daigneault said, “and it is something that could unify the municipality.” The dome in Alexandria is serving as an example of the type of multi-use sports fa- cility AP Township might have. Part of the outreach from staff to community groups
involves finding out what types of sports or other activities the dome could accom- modate. “We have a very active youth soccer group,” Daigneault noted, adding that the dome could also house special events like concerts or other activities.
