Art Center From a Different View
Music and Movement A Bear Adventure Create a recording of “Going on a Bear Hunt”(below) and make it available, along with an assortment of musical instruments. Encourage children to listen to the chant while repeating the words and making music to accompany the chant. We’re going on a bear hunt. We are not afraid. Oh no! Look! Tall grass!
Tape a sheet of paper to the bottom of a table or chair and invite children to lie underneath and draw a picture. Provide crayons or markers so that color strokes are easily made. Ask children to talk about what they saw “down under.” Extension idea: Invite children to pose a stuffed animal in different over-and- under positions in the art center. Have children draw a picture of the stuffed animal and label it “over” or “under.”
Can’t go over it, can’t go under it, can’t go around it. Got to go through it. (Repeat, using: tall tree,
wide river, gooey mud, dark cave. Then go backward.)
Science Center Movement Sort The books in this theme each show how an animal moves. Set out (or invite children to cut out) pictures of animals moving. Label boxes with a movement word and an animal picture. For example: climb/picture of a monkey climbing; swim/picture of a fish swimming. Other movements can include: fly, hop, run, dive. Encourage children to sort the animal pictures by how the animal moves. Provide drawing materials so children can draw a picture of themselves moving (jumping, climbing, running) to add to the boxes.
