Additional Ideas Theme 2
Showing and talking about our feelings
Use these ideas to enhance the “Jump for Joy!” Storytime Plan.
Young children are naturally expressive and reveal their feelings through words and behavior. The stories in this storytime prompt children to explore the full range of their emotions and feelings safely through the story characters. This helps them to learn new vocabulary for emotions and feelings. The books, discussion, and activities also enhance children’s social and emotional development and can include the topics of friendship and self-awareness.

Getting Started Creating a Positive Environment
The books in this plan may spark children’s interest in friendships, feelings, and concepts of self. Provide children with safety mirrors to use to explore various facial expressions. Add puppets to your dramatic play center and encourage children to act out different emotions. Be sure that your space is print-rich, with labels and signs
for important areas. Engaging Families
Invite families to talk with their children about what makes them happy. Make enough copies of the Cozy Corner Family Time page so that each child can take one home to make a “My Friendship Book” with the family. Meeting Individual Needs Use the additional curriculum connections and center activities in this guide to customize learning experiences for children who need additional motivation, challenge, or support. See the “Jump for Joy!” Storytime Plan for specific support for English learners.
