Additional Ideas Theme 3
Exploring out in the world and back again
Use these ideas to enhance the “On the Move!” Storytime Plan.
Young children are natural storytellers. They’re eager to share the intrigue of a bus ride, a playdate, a trip to a new playground, or other adventures. In recounting these events or telling stories, they show their narrative skill. This theme’s books, conversations, songs, and activities model and encourage great storytelling about adventures on the way to new places.

Getting Started Creating a Positive Environment
Because children are curious to learn about places near and far, you may want to fill your storytime area with photos from around your neighborhood—as well as images of unfamiliar places. For example, if you live in a city, children may be curious about a farm—or a zoo, a duck pond, or small-town streets. Children who live far from a big city might be interested in skyscrapers, apartment buildings, or city parks. Engaging Families Invite families to share places their children like to visit or have visited by bringing postcards, photos, and other memory items. Make enough copies of the Cozy Corner Family Time page for each child to be able to make a “My On the Move! Book” with his or her family. Meeting Individual Needs Use the additional curriculum connections and center activities in this guide to customize learning experiences for children who need additional motivation, challenge, or support. See the “On the Move!” Storytime Plan for specific support for English learners.
