Additional Ideas Theme 4
Our world is filled with sounds to hear and imitate
Use these ideas to enhance the “Snap, Crackle, Moo!” Storytime Plan.
Playing with language is one way to develop phonological awareness, or the ability to distinguish the sounds of spoken language. Words that represent the sound that something makes—onomatopoeia—are often silly. The books in this storytime theme are full of silly and wonderful onomatopoeic words that develop phonological awareness skills and build children’s ability to listen carefully. The theme can be expanded to explore community helpers in your neighborhood.

Getting Started Creating a Positive Environment
Fill your space with rhymes and chants from the Storytime Plan, the back of this Program Guide, and other favorite books and poems that develop awareness of sound. Also, tie the idea of community workers and their tools and trucks to onomatopoeia. If possible, provide children with access to the included music CD as well as percussion instruments, a radio, a bell, and a phone (if you have one). Engaging Families Invite families to teach their own favorite rhymes and songs to their children and possibly send written copies to share at school. Make enough copies of the Cozy Corner Family Time page for each child to take one home and make a “My Community Book.” Meeting Individual Needs Use the additional curriculum connections and center activities in this guide to customize learning experiences for children who need additional motivation, challenge, or support. See the “Snap, Crackle, Moo!” Storytime Plan for specific support for English learners.
