Additional Ideas Theme 5

Talking about the foods we like

Use these ideas to enhance the “Munch a Bunch!” Storytime Plan.

A child’s first choices are often related to taste and food preferences. The book I Am an Apple helps children understand something familiar as they explore how an apple grows. Similarly, a book on chameleons helps children connect what they already know to new ideas. You can expand these ideas to relate to curriculum topics such as food, personal preferences, and choices. This theme’s books contain a mix of informational text and fantasy. This combination of text types presents an opportunity for children to learn that illustrations and photos carry meaning that often enhances what is written.

Getting Started Creating a Positive Environment

Fill your dramatic play center with collected empty cereal boxes, clean oatmeal containers, and milk and egg cartons from families. Also place grocery store ads and flyers, menus, etc. in the classroom library as sources of real-world reading. You may also want to invite families to send in photos and recipes of their favorite home-cooked meals and leave printouts to play with in the kitchen area. Engaging Families Invite families to share ideas about healthy snacks as well as foods that are part of their culture. Make enough copies of the Cozy Corner Family Time page for each child to be able to make a “My Food Book” with his or her family. Meeting Individual Needs Use the additional curriculum connections and center activities in this guide to customize learning experiences for children who need additional motivation, challenge, or support. See the “Munch a Bunch!” Storytime Plan for specific support for English learners.
