Additional Ideas Theme 6

Using rhyme, rhythm, and repetition

Use these ideas to enhance the “1, 2, 3! Repeat After Me!” Storytime Plan.

Playing with words and sounds enhances young children’s phonological awareness. Chosen for their rhyme and repetition, the books in this theme all feature animals and enhance children’s social and emotional development by providing fun sounds children can make with each other.

Getting Started Creating a Positive Environment

Fill your classroom with books that feature rhyme and repetition. Start a rhyming-word wall to add to as children note new words that rhyme. Also provide books and magazines to help children focus on animals. To enhance children’s understanding of the stories, gather photographs from magazines and other nonfiction sources to show what real llamas, skunks, and wolves look like. Engaging Families Invite families to talk with their children about favorite animals and to share any animal songs or rhymes they may know. Send home a copy of the Theme 6 Family Time page so that each child can create a book of rhymes with his or her family. Meeting Individual Needs Use the additional curriculum connections and center activities in this guide to customize learning experiences for children who need additional motivation, challenge, or support. See the “1, 2, 3! Repeat After Me!” Storytime Plan for specific support for English learners.
