Writing Center A Fish Story

Science Center Marine Murals

Have children fish for letters. Tie a magnet to the end of a string attached to a dowel. Attach paper clips to construction-paper fish and write a letter on each fish. Have children catch fish and name the letter.

Invite children to create a mural of an aquatic ecosystem. Hang pictures of a saltwater and a freshwater ecosystem in your center for children to use as inspiration. Set out mural paper and supplies. Include foil, tissue paper, or wax paper for children to represent

Extension idea: Children tape or glue the construction-paper fish at the top of a blank page. Then they can draw or write names of animals or objects

water. Children can draw or cut out pictures of plants and animals that live in that environment.

found in nature that start with the letter on the fish.

Water Play Area What Floats?

Classroom Library Extend the theme by adding related books and media to your Classroom Library. • The Umbrella by Jan Brett • In the Small, Small Pond by Denis Fleming (Weston Woods Book with Audio) • Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (Weston Woods Book with Audio) • Hello Ocean/Hola, mar (bilingual) by Pam Muñoz Ryan • Owl Moon by Jane Yolen (Bilingual Mandarin/English Weston Woods Video)

Provide a large tub of water and various small objects, such as a coin, cork, sponge, tennis ball, or stone. Tell children to drop the items into the water one at a time to find out which items sink and which float. Have children sort the objects into two categories: “sink” and “float.” Extension idea: Invite children to think of different items and predict whether they will sink or float by drawing or writing their names in either the “sink” or “float” columns.
