ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
LEARNING THAT STICKS (AND SPLATTERS!) This year’s theme — “Throw the Playdoh on the Ceiling, Build It Together, Keep It Simple” — encouraged educators and students alike to embrace creativity, collaboration, and purposeful simplicity. From kindergarten to grade 5, classrooms buzzed with energy as learning came alive through hands-on, real-world experiences.
THINKING BIG K-5
All students across K–5 explored critical thinking units built around problem-based learning led by our Gifted and Talented Teachers. These projects challenged students to think deeply, ask questions, and solve complex problems — laying the groundwork for innovation and leadership.
SAY HELLO TO AI
BUILDING BILINGUAL BRILLIANCE
Teachers were introduced to artificial intelligence tools to enhance their instructional design. With support from instructional coaches and staff development trainers, they learned to create engaging lesson “hooks,” personalize instruction, and design hands-on learning applications using AI.
Our Dual Language Program continues to grow! It expanded through Grade 1 this year and will move into Grade 2 next year, offering students the incredible gift of developing literacy and fluency in two languages. Click HERE for more information!
REAL TALK AT LUNCH
STEM AND CREATIVITY
Big strides were made across the district this year: from a new teacher evaluation tool to a revised para evaluation system for next year. Principals and vice principals also participated in school-to-school visits to reflect, collaborate, and grow. And with our SEL training “It Begins With Us”, staff wellness stayed front and center — because thriving educators create thriving students.
Our Chief Academic Officer of Elementary visited seven schools to conduct lunch interviews with students in grades K–5. These casual conversations gave students a voice and provided authentic insight into what they love about school — and what they hope for next.
PLAY, WONDER, LEARN
TUTORING WITH IMPACT
With the support of a High Impact Tutoring Grant from the NJDOE, we launched targeted interventions that provided personalized, small-group instruction. This initiative has already made a measurable difference for many students working toward grade- level expectations.
Kindergarten teachers received training in the use of inquiry bins — a playful and developmentally appropriate approach to early learning. This strategy helps foster curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking in our youngest learners.
As we look ahead, let’s carry this momentum “Beyond Our Walls.” Let’s imagine learning that stretches past the desk, the schedule, and even the classroom. Our teachers laid the foundation—and next year, we grow it outward. ~ Baninder Goomer, Chief Academic Officer
District Cultivating Community Celebration
The 2nd Annual Edison Cultivating Community Celebration took place this spring, at John P. Stevens High School, with the theme Amplify Impact, Inspire Change. The showcase brought together over 450 students and families across all 19 schools in Edison Township Public Schools celebrating community and belonging. This event was a true celebration of Edison Township's Teacher Champions and R.I.S.E. student leaders , who collaborated to share their passion, creativity, and commitment to driving positive change in the school community. Organized by Dr. Hitisha Patel and the Teacher Champions —Nicole Brown (LNC), Alexandra Mendoza (WES), Meghana Vaghani (BEN), Jessica Rodriguez (MAR), Kristen Calenda (MEN), Amy Fuentes (MON), Camille Catalon (LND), Samantha Bruno (WBK), Thu Win-Lee (MLK), Megan Benson (JMI), Jessica Sanchez (JMP), Neha Coles (HHMS), Frank Saverino (JAMS), Sam Laiso (TJMS), Haley Connell (WWMS), Sanyogita Padhye-Basu (JPS), Katie Stellakis (EHS), Tom White (Music & Visual Arts Supervisor)—the evening spotlighted projects and programs that create spaces of belonging for all students. The program opened with an uplifting performance by the Woodbrook Elementary Choir, led by Marisa Tomasella, featuring Kusimama, Lift Me Up, and Rise Up , combining powerful vocals with messages of hope and unity. The JAMS Drama Club, led by Frank Saverino, energized the crowd with Be Our Guest from Beauty and the Beast Jr., while the J.P. Stevens Dance Ensemble, led by Cara Stine, concluded performances for the evening with vibrant choreography. The performances highlighted the district’s focus on belonging and artistic excellence. Following the performances, attendees took a self-guided tour of district-wide projects and art displays from all K-12 schools. Student-led initiatives highlighted connections, creativity, and community. Projects such as Food for Thought and Flavors of Family explored themes like food insecurity, sustainability, and identity, while read-alouds of Maddi’s Fridge an d That’s Not My Name sparked empathy and reflection. Upper-grade students led book clubs, created food trucks inspired by their heritage, and designed Share Tables to reduce food waste, while younger students engaged in buddy programs to build lasting friendships with their peers. Hands-on activitie s like keychain-making, bento box conversations, and SEL crafts gave students the opportunity to express themselves and connect with one another. Additionally, schools highlighted the importance of belonging, kindness, and embracing others for who they truly are. Stations such as Books of Belonging, Night of the Arts , and Lincoln Inspires celebrated student voices through literature and art, while programs like The Etiquette Experience, Stomping Out Stereotypes, and Words Make Herds fostered thoughtful conversations around family traditions, respectful language, and support systems. The Cultivating Community celebration was a truly inspiring evening, honoring the dynamic student leadership that continues to flourish within Edison Township. We look forward to a great celebration next year!

Office of Dr. Bevere & Mr. D ’ Avanzo
As we close out another incredible school year, we want to take a moment to thank our students, families, and staff for making this a year full of growth, joy, and community. Over the past few months, our school has been buzzing with excitement— from student-led fundraisers and field trips to science fairs, performances, and hands- on learning experiences. These moments have truly showcased the spirit and talent of our school community. We are so proud of all that our students have
accomplished, and we look forward to seeing many of them stay engaged through our summer programs and events. Whether you’re participating in a summer activity or taking time to relax and recharge, we hope the months ahead are filled with fun, learning, and well-deserved rest. Thank you for a fantastic year—we can’t wait to welcome everyone back in the fall for another amazing chapter! Warmly, Dr. Bevere & Mr. D’Avanzo Principal & Assistant Principal
Learning beyond the classrooms
This spring, students across all grade levels took their learning on the road with exciting and educational field trips! Fifth Grade explored the wonders of science and innovation at the Ben Franklin Institute, where hands-on exhibits brought STEM to life. Fourth Grade enjoyed a wild adventure at the Turtle Back Zoo, observing animals up close and deepening their understanding of wildlife habitats. Third Grade traveled to the Liberty Science Center, where interactive exhibits and experiments sparked curiosity and critical thinking. Second Grade experienced a day of teamwork and fun at a Somerset Patriots baseball game, learning about sportsmanship and enjoying America’s favorite pastime. First Grade wrapped up their animal unit with a trip to the Staten Island Zoo, connecting classroom learning to real-life encounters with amazing creatures. Each trip was filled with exploration, discovery, and plenty of memorable moments!
First Grade Gets Scientific! Our curious First Grade scientists spent the day immersed in hands-on discovery during Science Exploration Rotations! Students traveled from classroom to classroom, engaging in exciting experiments led by each First Grade teacher. From stretching slime and squishing playdough to testing oobleck’s mysterious properties and watching color burst during the Skittles Diffusion Experiment, students had the chance to observe, question, and explore like real scientists. The day wrapped up with the Wacky Balloon Experiment, leaving students eager and inspired!

Novel Study Novices More!
Third Grade students recently embarked on their very first novel study—and they rose to the challenge! Through this experience, students built their reading stamina, engaged in thoughtful literature circle discussions, and sharpened their critical thinking skills. With each chapter, they grew more confident in sharing ideas, making connections, and diving deeper into the text. It was a meaningful step forward on their journey as independent readers!
Future CEOs in Action!
Fifth Grade students recently wrapped up their exciting journey through BIZWorld, where they stepped into the shoes of real entrepreneurs. Over the course of the project, students learned about the entrepreneurial cycle, formed their own companies, and created unique products to sell. The experience culminated in the lively BIZWorld Market, where families and visitors shopped to support these imaginative and hardworking young business owners. It was a fantastic showcase of creativity, teamwork, and real-world learning!
Math Masters Multiply the Fun! T To wrap up May with some math excitement, Fourth Grade students competed in a lively Multiplication Showdown! Classes went head-to-head to test their fact fluency and show off their lightning-fast multiplication skills. With plenty of cheering and spirited competition, students celebrated their hard work and growth as confident, quick-thinking mathematicians. What a fun way to multiply the momentum as the year winds down!
Field Day!
Kids heart challenge
Our annual Field Day was a huge hit, bringing joy, energy, and teamwork to every corner of the building! Students rotated through a variety of exciting activities, including water sponge relays, carnival games, and a hands-on STEM challenge. The fun didn’t stop there—music from a live DJ kept spirits high, and a visit from the Italian ice truck gave everyone a sweet way to cool down. It was the perfect day of movement, laughter, and schoolwide celebration!
Students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade took part in the Kids Heart Challenge, showing off their jump rope skills while raising funds for the American Heart Association. Through generous donations, school spirit, and heart-healthy fun, Ben Franklin raised over $4,200 to support kids with special hearts! A huge thank you to everyone who registered, donated, completed Finn’s Mission, and participated in this meaningful annual event. Together, we’re making a difference—one jump at a time!
Science Fair
Students proudly displayed their science projects, sharing their experiments and findings with families, friends, and the school community. In addition to the amazing displays, the event featured two interactive stations that wowed the crowd: a Water Balloon Drop Challenge, where students engineered protective vessels to keep water balloons intact when dropped from the roof, and Oobleck Races, where brave participants sprinted through pools filled with the strange, goopy substance. It was a night of discovery, hands-on fun, and a true celebration of science!
Future Leaders, Real Impact Our Student Council leaders recently organized a Ice Pop and Ice Cream Fundraiser to support families in our school community who were affected by a recent fire. From planning and promoting the event to managing sales and keeping things running smoothly, these student leaders showed incredible responsibility, compassion, and teamwork. The fundraiser not only brought smiles with sweet treats, but also brought our school community together in a powerful display of kindness and support.
STEM in Action with LyondellBasell!
Family Art Night
The 2nd Annual Family Art Night at BEN was a vibrant celebration of creativity. The community enjoyed a stunning Gallery Walk of student artwork, hands-on fun at various Art Creation Stations, and a special presentation of original poetry by our Poetree Program winners. The event was made even more meaningful through a partnership with EHS students and former BEN student Samyuktha Nair, who helped guide and support our young poets. Another highlight was the first-ever performance by the BOLT Dance Team, whose energy and talent brought the crowd to their feet. It was truly an evening to remember!
Our Fourth Grade BOLTs had an exciting opportunity to learn from real-world engineers during a special visit from LyondellBasell! Through a series of engaging, hands-on STEM activities, students explored scientific concepts in action—asking questions, testing ideas, and having a blast along the way. This interactive experience brought classroom learning to life and sparked even more curiosity about the world of science and engineering. A big thank you to LyondellBasell for inspiring our future innovators!
BEN Summer Challenge & Reading Event!
To keep the love of reading going all summer long, every student in Grades K–5 will be receiving a special summer reading book to take home! We can’t wait to hear what they think at our upcoming Summer Reading Event, DIP into Reading, where students will have the chance to discuss their book, connect with friends, and participate in fun, literacy-filled activities. The event will also include special community visitors. It’s the perfect way to celebrate stories, spark imagination, and build excitement for reading all summer long!
JAMES MADISON INTERMEDIATE Home of the Knights
Odyssey of the Mind , coached by Ms. Misko and Ms. Rutzler, had two teams participate during the 2024–2025 school year. One of the teams advanced to the state competition. The “Cooking with Books” team placed 3rd at States with their creative solution, "Through the Looking Glass." Although the Mech Animal Robot team did not advance, both teams demonstrated impressive creativity, teamwork, and problem- solving throughout the season.
For the third year in a row, JMI is the only elementary school in the district with students accepted into the New Jersey State Elementary Choir. Thanks to Ms. Tarby's guidance, nine students were selected and performed on May 3, 2025, in Flemington alongside peers from across the state. Congratulations to our students, and thank you, Ms. Tarby, for making this possible!
JMI is home to a published author ! Congratulations to our very own 5th-grade teacher, Ms. Misko, for getting her first book, Monster Feelings: Miss Anne Gree, published. Ms. Misko collaborated with one of her former students, Ruhaan Khatri, who illustrated the book. The book is scheduled for release October 2025!
TIME CAPSULE CEREMONY 2000 ~ 2025 ~ 2050
Students and staff at JMI came together for a special moment in school history as we opened a time capsule sealed in 2000 and introduced a new one to be opened in 2050. The ceremony was filled with excitement, laughter, and a few surprises as we reflected on how much has changed—and what has stayed the same. Inside the 2000 capsule, students discovered Pokémon cards, an NSYNC poster, an old flip phone, a ShopRite circular, newspapers highlighting a Yankees World Series win, a Furby, and even a Flag Day poem. The crowd laughed at the idea of life without smartphones and cheered at the mention of Harry Potter! In contrast, our 2025 capsule features a copy of Because of Mr. Terupt, a student yearbook, a snapshot of our current students and staff, and mini pop culture items—from Crocs to a Stanley water bottle. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2050 to see how today’s memories stand the test of time!
At JMI, the Green Team leads sustainability efforts all year long! We’ve recycled over 1,000 pounds of plastic through the Trex Program, earning outdoor items made from recycled materials. This year, we collected nearly 400 pounds of plastic wrap and almost 400 cans to recycle through PepsiCo Recycle Rally, earning supplies for our Green Team. To reduce food waste, we donate our leftover breakfast items weekly to the Hands of Hope Food Pantry, which helps local Edsion families. We also recycle school supplies, batteries, and snack pouches through programs like Staples and TerraCycle, earning points to support global causes. Our Annual Earth Day Celebration brings the school community together through games, activities, and student-led projects. This year’s event featured a custom sticker designed by our 5th-grade Green Team!
Our JMI Math Club reached new heights this year, with our 5th-grade students earning a spot on the National Winners List for the Continental Math League — marking the first time JMI has received national recognition! We are incredibly proud of our students for this outstanding achievement. Thank you to all the parents who generously volunteer their time for Math Club every Wednesday night, and a special thanks to our dedicated Math Club coordinators for making these enriching opportunities possible for our students.
If you stop by JMI on the third Friday of each month, you’ll find one of the busiest "stores" in Edison! Our student-run school store, Knights' Treasures , offers school essentials and fun trinkets to the JMI community. Operated by students in Mrs. Peters’, Mrs. Modzelewski’s, and Mrs. Agostinacchio’s classes, the store gives students the opportunity to choose inventory, set prices, and take on roles such as salesperson and cashier. It’s a wonderful way for students to build real-world skills while contributing to our school community.
One of the most anticipated fundraisers of the year at JMI is our annual Soak Your Teacher event ! Students earn the chance to drench a brave staff member with a bucket of water—all in good fun and for a great cause. Every splash supports our Project Unified team, promoting inclusion and school spirit throughout our community. Kudos to Mrs. Agostinacchio and Mr. Morales for organizing the event, and a big thank- you to Mr. Jimmy, Mrs. Della Salla, Mr. Zapata, Mr. Mockoviak, and our building administrators for being such great sports!

After gathering input from staff, students, and families, we’ve crafted our mission and vision statements for our 5-year strategic plan. Take a look here to see how we plan to achieve our goals and shape the future! JMP’s Mission & Vision
Bunny Beets Lounge
Bunny Bean Cafe Soft Opening
This year, we proudly launched the Bunny Beets Lounge , a vibrant collaboration with families, community members, and the JPS Tri-M Honor Society . Designed to bring entertainment to our students during Fun Friday lunches, this initiative not only inspires future artists but also strengthens our community connections—all while creating a fun and engaging atmosphere!
Bunny Buddies
JMP’s Equity Committee launched the Bunny Buddies pilot program, where 1st and 2nd graders serve as peer models in Art and Gym, working with classes across the building. Through this experience, they are learning that every child learns and communicates differently. Along the way, they’ve been developing leadership skills, empathy, patience, and forming meaningful new friendships.
Fun Fridays at JMP
Once a month, JMP celebrates Fun Friday—a special day where students bring in items from home and enjoy the joy of unstructured play! Each class tailors the experience to fit their needs—some dedicate the whole day to free play, while others incorporate themed activities or set aside a few playful hours. No matter the format, Fun Fridays are all about creativity, connection, and letting kids be kids!
Leading Through STEAM Each month, Mr. Seiler and Mrs. Callahan lead hands-on STEAM lessons for all students, modeling innovative, student-centered teaching. These lessons double as professional development, giving staff a look into planning, tools like ChatGPT, and strategies for real-world classroom use—while strengthening student connections.
Our school is thrilled to introduce Main Street, an exciting new initiative designed to immerse students in real- world learning experiences. With the soft openings of the Bunny Bean Café and Burrow Market, students are gaining valuable life skills—such as communication, responsibility, and problem-solving—through hands-on, engaging opportunities. These storefronts are thoughtfully designed to support all learners, especially our self-contained and LLD students, who are shining as they take on roles like preparing and serving beverages, managing transactions, and welcoming staff customers. These Welcome to Main Street: Real-World Learning in Action!
Thanksgiving STEAM Parade: A Celebration of Creativity and Collaboration
Our Innovation Committee launched a spectacular school-wide project that had every class dreaming big and designing their very own parade float! Students explored the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, discovered the science behind floating balloons, and brought unique class With the high school drumline setting the rhythm and a live-streamed broadcast for families to enjoy from home, the parade was a joyful celebration for our entire community. From the grandstand, our Assistant Principal, World Language teacher, and a Student Council rep narrated the event as each float It was a day filled with imagination, teamwork, and school spirit—one we won’t soon forget!

teamwork in a supportive, meaningful setting. And this is just the beginning! Main Street will continue to expand with more storefronts and business ventures, opening the door to even more exciting learning opportunities for all students.
Kindergarten Theme Days Make Learning Come Alive! Grade Level Innovation Projects
Our incredible Kindergarten teachers have created engaging theme days that blend hands-on fun with key curriculum standards. Each day is thoughtfully designed to be inclusive, culturally responsive, and meaningful to students. Highlights include: Hibernation Day – Cozy up and explore how animals survive winter. Apple Day – Count, sort, and experiment with all things apples. Rainbow Day – Dive into the science and stories behind rainbows.
These joyful experiences connect learning to students’ lives, making school both fun and meaningful!
First Grade's Garden-to-Table Adventure Our first graders took hands-on learning to the next level by starting their very own hydroponic garden! They observed plant growth, cared for herbs and leafy greens, and watched their garden thrive. When harvest time arrived, students picked their crops and took part in a tasty celebration —sampling fresh herbs, making dips, and creating delicious salads with their homegrown ingredients. A fun and flavorful way to learn about science, responsibility, and healthy eating!
Second Grade Explores the World of Work Our second graders are diving into the world of work with an exciting cross-curricular Career Exploration Project! Every few Fridays, students participate in “Career Days” where they learn about different professions through nonfiction books, videos, and special guest speakers. These hands-on experiences help students understand what various jobs involve and spark curiosity about the future. The project will culminate in student presentations where they proudly share what they’ve learned!
Our school has begun a beautiful new tradition—adding uplifting murals throughout the building to brighten our hallways and spread positive messages. With the creativity and guidance of our talented art teacher, these murals are more than just decoration; they’re a reflection of our school’s values of kindness, inclusion, and community. One of our most impactful additions is located just outside the gymnasium and invites everyone to “Be the ‘I’ in KIND.” Students love stepping into the message and becoming part of the artwork! These murals also celebrate our commitment to integration and immersive learning for all students, especially those with special needs. In addition to the murals, we’ve proudly added vibrant art displays to showcase students’ creativity and celebrate their unique voices. Each mural and display serves as a powerful visual reminder that every student matters, belongs, and helps make our school a kinder, brighter place. Spreading Positivity Through Art
NEWS FROM THE OWL’S NEST James Monroe Presents.. Annie, Jr. Annie Jr. lit up the stage this past month at James Monroe School with
heartwarming performances on June 4th and 5th. The cast and crew dedicated many hours rehearsing songs, dances, and scenes to bring this classic musical to life under the direction of Mrs. Meagan Sanchez and Mrs. Lisa Romeo. Talented backstage crew and a group of student set designers helped transform the stage into 1930s New York City thanks to the creativity and leadership of the Production Club, led by Ms. Maureen Speckin and Ms. Danielle Buzy.
It truly takes a village to put on a show of this scale, with more than 300 students from Kindergarten through fifth grade contributing in one way or another. Our production wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of the entire James Monroe staff, who continue to foster a creative and supportive environment where students grow through the arts. Congratulations to the cast and crew of Annie Jr.—your hard work, resilience, and joy lit up the stage and reminded us all, just like Annie sings, that “the sun’ll come out tomorrow.”

JAMES Principal Cyndi Tufaro Assistant Principal Argiris Hristofis MONROE ELEMENTARY One School, One Book: The Lemonade War
James Monroe School celebrated literacy and community through this year’s One School, One Book program, featuring The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. The initiative kicked off with excitement as every student received a free copy of the book to take home and enjoy with their families. To support shared reading, teachers recorded read-aloud videos so students could follow along at home. Each morning, the school tuned in to a comprehension question “call-in” challenge during announcements sparking discussion. Inspired by the book’s themes, the school also hosted Alex’s Lemonade Stand, supporting the fight against childhood cancer. The event concluded with a school-wide read aloud of the final chapter and a refreshing cup of lemonade for every student to celebrate a successful school- wide reading experience.
A Zesty Summer of Learning
James Monroe School kicked off summer in flavorful fashion, thanks to the creativity and planning of our incredible Intervention Team. Families and students enjoyed a fun-filled event designed to promote learning and connection as the school year came to a close. Highlights included a lively Family Game Show that brought everyone together for laughs and learning. Students also received Summer Learning Materials to keep their skills sharp during the break and a visit from the Ice Cream Truck added a sweet touch to the day. It was a joyful and meaningful way to celebrate the end of the school year while setting students up for continued growth over the summer.
