Student Voice at MLK At MLK, we believe that every student should feel seen, heard, and valued. Giving students a voice helps build confidence, strengthens our school community, and encourages empathy and respect for others. Through a variety of creative and collaborative projects, students had the chance to express their thoughts, share their uniqueness, and help shape the culture of our school. Dot Day Dot Day was a creative celebration inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Students made vibrant dot art using coffee filters, markers, and spray bottles. Fifth graders left their thumbprints on a special wall, making a lasting mark on our school community. The colorful dots decorated our hallways and served as a reminder that everyone can make a meaningful contribution. Winter Mittens Mural In January, students created their own paper mittens to share what they love about winter. These thoughtful creations were added to our MLK Tree mural, transforming a simple hallway display into a warm celebration of student voices and seasonal joy. It was a fun and meaningful way for students to connect and express themselves. Unique Like a Snowflake In December, students decorated paper snowflakes, each sharing something that makes them unique. These snowflakes were displayed all around the building, creating a beautiful reminder that every child brings something special to our school. Returning from winter break to see their work showcased brought smiles and a sense of pride to all. Buddy Hands for Autism Acceptance During Autism Acceptance Month, buddy classes teamed up for a powerful activity focused on similarities and differences. Students created pairs of handprints—one showing what they had in common and the other showing something that made them different. Whether through drawing or writing, students celebrated inclusion and the beauty of individuality. Evening of the Arts The Evening of the Arts was a stunning showcase of student creativity and voice. The hallways came alive with vibrant artwork, and live performances brought joy and inspiration to all who attended. Families were moved by the talent and heart expressed by our young artists and performers. PBSIS Commitment Signing As part of our Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) program, students worked together to define what it means to be kind, respectful, responsible, and safe. They brainstormed what those values look, sound, and feel like, and then signed class commitment letters to live out those values each day. The MLK Lion even joined in during our celebration day, cheering on students as they pledged to make their school a better place. Lunar New Year Celebration Students across MLK participated in a joyful and educational celebration of Lunar New Year. They made crafts in art class, explored the culture in social studies, and watched a colorful parade featuring traditional costumes, drumming, dancing, and even a lion! It was a meaningful way for students to honor cultural traditions and celebrate diversity within our school community.
