MLK and It’s Community

The Mitten Tree Inspired by the beloved book The Mitten Tree, our school hosted a mitten and glove collection during the month of January. Students and families were invited to donate new mittens and gloves to help keep others warm during the winter season. Donations were proudly hung on our "Mitten Tree," creating a beautiful visual display of generosity and kindness. This heartwarming initiative reminded us all of the importance of giving and caring for those in need. Shoe Bin Donation Drive A JP Stevens High School student led a community service project collecting new or gently used shoes to raise money for families in need. Our MLK community contributed around 412 pairs of shoes. These donations helped raise over $1,300 to support local families, showcasing the generosity and compassion of our school. Murals Painted Around the School Under the leadership of the Beautification Committee, students from the JP Stevens National Art Honor Society and Ava Valley collaborated on a mural project. Their artwork now brightens both the interior and exterior of our school building. The murals bring creativity, school pride, and inspiration to our everyday environment. CPR Training Support Students from Edison High School volunteered their time to help expose MLK students to CPR training. Their guidance and support ensured that our students understood the importance of CPR. We are thankful for their commitment to community safety and partnership. Breast Cancer Awareness Month In October, our school honored Breast Cancer Awareness Month with school-wide participation. Pink ribbons were displayed throughout the building, and students and staff worked together to raise money for a local charity. The month concluded with a meaningful walk around the school to show support for those affected by breast cancer. Book Donation from KPMG and Rutgers Thanks to the generosity of KPMG and students from Rutgers University, every student at MLK received a brand-new book. During Read Across America Week, volunteers came to our school to distribute the books and read to students. This visit helped foster a

love for reading and created lasting memories. Reading with the JP Stevens Volleyball Team

The JP Stevens High School volleyball team visited MLK to read aloud to our students. Their time and enthusiasm were greatly appreciated and served as positive role models for our young readers. It was a joyful experience that connected students across age groups through the power of books. MLK Fun Color Run To raise funds for school initiatives, MLK students participated in a colorful and exciting Fun Run. Participants ran while throwing vibrant colored powder, creating a festive and energetic atmosphere. As a fun reward, the top fundraiser got to throw powder on the principal, bringing lots of smiles and laughter. Math-a-Thon for St. Jude This year, our students once again took part in the Math-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With the support of families and the community, they raised an impressive $12,000. Our total contribution over the years has now surpassed $160,000—an incredible accomplishment that reflects our students' empathy and commitment to making a difference.
