The Joy of Learning- MLK Throwing Playdough on the Ceiling
At MLK, we know that when students are having fun, they’re more engaged, motivated, and ready to learn. Blending joy with academics helps students form lasting memories, deepen their understanding, and develop a lifelong love of learning. This year, our teachers found creative and exciting ways to make learning both meaningful and fun across all grade levels. Third Grade Amusement Parks In Ms. Fedor and Mrs. Ronco’s classes, third graders became amusement park designers while practicing math concepts like area and perimeter. They planned out their parks with great detail and excitement, applying real-world problem-solving along the way. This creative approach helped students see math as something fun, useful, and even magical. Dance Breaks On a chilly day, students warmed up by dancing their way through a quick brain break. These spontaneous moments brought smiles, energy, and laughter to the classroom. Dance breaks are a great way to reset, recharge, and keep learning fun and active throughout the day. Chalk the Walk Students from across the school came together to decorate the sidewalks with uplifting messages and colorful artwork. "Chalk the Walk" gave students a chance to express positivity and creativity while leaving a mark on the school grounds. It was a simple yet powerful way to combine art, writing, and community spirit. Pie Day Celebration On March 14th, students celebrated Pi Day with math games, activities, and even some whipped cream fun! Two brave teachers were “pied” by administrators, bringing lots of laughter and excitement to the day. Through hands-on activities and themed lessons, students deepened their understanding of this special math concept in a way they’ll always remember. Inflatables Parade To cap off an unforgettable Field Day, teachers and administrators dressed in inflatable costumes and paraded around the school. Students couldn’t stop smiling as their grown-ups bounced, waddled, and danced down the hallways. This joyful moment reminded everyone that school can be a place where learning and laughter go hand in hand. Elf on the Shelf In the days leading up to winter break, administrators surprised students by dressing up as “Elves on the Shelf” and hiding around the building. Students eagerly searched for the elves each day, turning an ordinary week into a festive and memorable adventure. This playful tradition sparked curiosity and encouraged teamwork and observation skills. 3D Gardens – Read Across America In celebration of Read Across America, Mrs. Young’s 1st grade students created 3D gardens inspired by Poison Garden by Millie Fleur. They used a variety of art tools to bring their literary visions to life, turning reading into a multisensory experience. The project reinforced reading comprehension while igniting students’ creativity and imagination. Peep Day in Class 2-3 Mrs. Ramos’ 2nd grade class combined science, math, reading, and writing into one unforgettable day—Peep Day! Each student adopted a peep bunny sponge, gave it a name, wrote stories, described it with adjectives, conducted experiments, and completed math activities. This playful, cross-curricular experience made learning deeply engaging and full of joy.
