Gloria
Gloria grew up in Marburg, attending school there alongside her brother, and it is clear that her small-town upbringing laid the foundation for a life filled with warmth, connection, and a wonderful sense of fun. Some of her fondest childhood memories centre around her time at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, where she discovered a love of basketball that would spark a lifelong enthusiasm for sport and staying active. Over the years, Gloria built a career as a Ledger Machine Operator, a role that required precision and dedication, while filling her spare time with tennis, golf, and lawn bowls. Her passion for golf even took her all the way to Norfolk Island for a round, combining two of her great loves: travel and a well-played game.
Golf, tennis, and lawn bowls remain close to Gloria’s heart today, and she continues to enjoy the camaraderie those sports bring. She is also a keen participant in the cooking and knitting groups here, bringing the same enthusiasm to the kitchen as she does to the green. Speaking of the kitchen, Gloria is something of a legend for her curried sausages. Those who have had the pleasure of tasting them will tell you they are not easily forgotten. One of the things Gloria holds dearest is friendship. She speaks fondly of the Breger girls, a tight-knit group of friends who shared many good times together, often meeting up at Berger Paints. It is the kind of friendship that defines a life. When asked about the biggest change she has witnessed in her lifetime, Gloria reflects thoughtfully: she believes women today enjoy far more rights and opportunities than in earlier generations, a change she clearly welcomes. Among her most treasured travel memories is a visit to Waldow with her daughter, where it snowed on Christmas Day, a magical and unexpected moment that has stayed with her ever since. The most important person in Gloria’s life has been her mother, and it is easy to understand why. Gloria’s mum lived to 100 years old, and Gloria herself has done exactly the same. Reaching a century is, in her own words, her proudest achievement alongside her marriage. Two milestones that speak volumes about a life well and truly lived. Gloria’s favourite song?
