b y L o u is T . T a lb o t , This is second in a series on six major cults. T h e founda t ion of this cult was laid in 1876 by Charles Taze Russell, upon which subse quently Joseph Franklin Rutherford and his successors built the superstructure. In the writ ings of these two men are embodied the heresies of the sect, later and current literature being mere restatements of their views. Over the years the cult bore many different names but under Rutherford’s leadership in 1931 the name Jehovah’s Witnesses was adopted. There are several splinter groups, with other names, all teaching the same doctrines, the largest of which is the Dawnites. They call themselves the “orthodox Russellites” and have re printed and pushed the sale of Russell’s ancient books whereas the Jehovah’s Witnesses adhere more closely to Rutherford. While Russell was called “The Great Paraphraser,” Rutherford was known as “The Great Promoter” who, as some one stated, “built the old Arian heresy into a million-dollar propaganda machine” with the use of modem advertising methods. It is a mixture of Unitarianism, Universalism, Second Probation, Restorationism and the Swedenborgian method of exegesis. Russell imposes on Scripture his own views and reads into it that which never entered the mind of the inspired writer. May God in His infinite mercy preserve His people from being deceived and be trayed by this counterfeit of Christianity!” Jehovah’s Witnesses exhibit a bitter animosity toward all organized religion. A chief watchword is: “Religion is a racket! Religion is a snare!” The cult is anti-Christ, anti-church and anti-gov ernment. Its members refuse to bear arms in de fense of this country and their children are taught to refuse to salute the flag of the United States. Over the years they have had many brushes with the law. They have allowed members to die whose lives, according to physicians, could have been saved by blood transfusions which they condemn as “eating blood.” Their so-called Bible study is but a slavish devotion to Watch Tower lessons and
