The prob­ lem, however, lies in the content of these volumes as they vary from a few presenting a weak defense and the majority calling for radical over­ haul or complete dissolution and abandonment of the institutional church. This brief work faces this same question but seeks to combine a positive side, showing the useful­ ness of the institutionalized church and yet pointing out some of the de­ fects that are quite apparent. The author’s viewpoint is interesting in that it is not as extreme as many. Yet he is looking for Christians who are active about their faith. He gives his own definition and framework of the church. In light of this he pre­ sents his evaluation of its function and usefulness. He is calling for more meaning and involvement for the activities that are occurring at the church. The chapter on “Teaching Them . . . All Things” should be considered by both Christian educator and pas­ tor. Mr. Noyce sees what the church could become and there is a hopeful note within this volume but he does make it clear as to the church’s weak­ ness. In terms of teaching by lay­ men in the church he states, “In most congregational life no clear line divides the teaching of those who are moving toward participation and those who, having professed faith, are seeking to grow in it.
