Abstract: Investigative journalism assumes critical importance during times of war and conflict due to its effective functional role in documenting violations and abuses, uncovering the truth, and contributing to accountability and the pursuit of justice. In this context, the study-through a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of investigative journalists-aims to explore the pivotal role that investigative journalism plays in the Arab region during periods of war and conflict. It also examines its effectiveness in covering violations and war crimes, and highlights the challenges investigative journalists face, as well as how they overcome them through modern technology. The study found that investigative journalists have demonstrated a strong capacity to produce impactful investigations in conflict zones, despite the restrictions imposed on them-as is evident in the war waged by Israel on the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023. These investigations have significantly influenced international public opinion, uncovered abuses, and in some cases led to the accountability of those responsible. The study also reveals that investigative journalists face numerous challenges in documenting violations during wartime, the most pressing of which is physical safety-an issue that directly affects their psychological well-being. Arrests and death threats create an intense climate of fear that profoundly impacts journalists’ mental health. Other wartime difficulties include limited mobility and restricted access to information. These challenges are further compounded by scarce financial resources, which hinder the preparation and production of investigative reports. Despite these pressures and obstacles, investigative journalists have managed to overcome many of these hurdles thanks to collaborative journalism and the use of advanced technologies and open-source tools.
