Abstract: The study explores the perceptions of Tunisian investigative journalists regarding artificial intelligence techniques and their application in the stages of investigative journalism production. It examines their editorial and technical use in daily journalistic practices, as well as during wars and conflicts. The study also looks ahead to the future of investigative journalism in Tunisia, considering the rapid technological advancements and their impact on the role of investigative journalists and the ethical framework. Using a qualitative approach, the study relies on in-depth interviews to gather information from a purposive sample of nine journalists and academics working in investigative journalism. It also draws on the theory of technological determinism to track changes in the landscape of investigative journalism, analysing Tunisian journalists’ awareness and their professional and ethical roles in a new technological environment that could challenge their traditional roles and force them to rethink their professional duties. The study further explores the impact of these technologies as tools in daily journalistic practices, especially during wars and conflicts. The study found that most of the participants lacked sufficient knowledge of the various artificial intelligence tools used in investigative content creation. However, they showed a willingness to learn and cautiously integrate AI tools into their investigative journalism work. The participants did not rely on AI tools for sourcing reliable information, instead preferring traditional methods for reaching their sources when preparing investigations. That said, some participants were familiar with AI tools that help detect misinformation and deepfakes, particularly in content related to conflict zones that are difficult to access. The study also warned that the uncritical or blind use of AI tools in investigative journalism could have a direct impact on the ethical standards of journalism in Tunisia.
