Abstract: This study looks into the relationship between investigative journalism and the adoption of the democratic route in the Moroccan case by examining the legal, institutional, political and professional environment that marked the emergence, spread and decline of investigative journalism in Morocco. It also investigates the impact of political and human rights openness that Morocco has witnessed since the 1990s on the relationship between the variables and the dynamics of their interaction. Consequently, the study aims to identify the limits of the relationship between the effectiveness of this type of journalism, the improvement of the political and economic climate, and the success of democratic and consolidation. To address this, the study employs the case study method, a qualitative research approach that allows for the descriptive and analytical examination of the manifestations and dimensions of the relationship between investigative journalism and democratic transition. This method also helps draw conclusions about the trajectory of the relationship between the two variables. The study is based on the hypothesis that there is a strong correlation between the spread of investigative journalism and progress in democratic transition. It suggests that investigative journalism is strengthened with the consolidation of democracy and its values in both society and the state. Moreover, the development of Moroccan journalism cannot be delved into in isolation from the evolution of the power struggle. Journalism has always been a domain for conflict, a front for political struggle, or a decisive weapon in the hands of those who possess or control it. As a result, political actors were keen to control media, which has negatively affected professionalism and rendered their platforms instruments of propaganda and publicity. The main finding of the study is that the Moroccan political and societal environment has not been conducive to the solidification of investigation journalism, with only a few attempts that were unsuccessful. Ultimately, this type of journalism remained fragile, subject to fluctuations between openness and repression, preventing the establishment of a stable investigative journalistic tradition in Morocco.
