Abstract: This study examines media ethics that enable the development of the quality of content presented by various forms of media, particularly investigative journalism, in the context of wars and conflicts that heighten societies’ need for journalism that uncovers violations and documents war crimes and crimes against humanity. The study adopts a qualitative approach based primarily on participant observation to explore ways of developing the social theory of the media and producing a new generation of ethical codes for journalists. These codes would guide journalists in their search for truth, handling of sources, and efforts to enhance content credibility. The study seeks to answer the following questions: How can the function of journalism in protecting society’s interests be developed? How can investigative journalism be advanced to help build the future of print journalism and media outlets? What are the ways to develop an ethical framework for investigative journalism that ensures high-quality content? How can a balanced relationship between investigative journalism and the public be built? The study argues that advancing the theory of social responsibility requires developing the functions of journalism—most importantly, enhancing its role in safeguarding society’s interests and defending society by exposing violations, breaches and corruption, as well as by warning the public of dangers. This, in turn, contributes to delivering distinguished content that attracts audiences. Moreover, journalists’ commitment to their social responsibility and professional role increases public trust in them and fosters a positive image of journalists as defenders of society’s interests and as public agents advocating for the public’s right to knowledge and access to information. Thus, the study emphasises the importance of working toward a new generation of ethical codes that define the responsibilities of media outlets and journalists toward society, ultimately leading to improved quality in the content produced by investigative journalism.
