HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
April showers have brought the May flowers, and now we’re putting them in bouquets for all the wonderful mothers in our lives. I am very blessed to know one who I’d like to introduce to you: My own mom, Patricia, who raised me and my five siblings and gave us a wonderful childhood. This loving woman I call “Mom” surely helped set me on my life journey. One of the qualities I admire most is her endless curiosity and love for learning. She is constantly excited about anything that is new to her. She is always reading a book, watching online talks, daily reading the Washington Post cover-to-cover and cutting out articles to share, and has recently taken to listening to podcasts through earbuds while she cooks. She is game for anything that feeds her
insatiable desire to learn, which appears to have been a driving force throughout her life. In high school, she received the senior award in history, leadership, and English. In addition to having a great mind, Mom was also a very good athlete and lettered in basketball. Though we faced many challenges during our childhood, my mom was loving and nurturing through it all. I think one of her secrets to weathering difficult times while raising six kids was exercising her great sense of humor. She always made me laugh. I recall an evening I was seated next to her while we all ate dinner together. One of my siblings was messing around at the opposite end of the table. Mom couldn’t reach them so she swatted me and said “Pass it down!”
Though my mom was a star student, I sometimes struggled with academics as a kid; English class was especially frustrating to me. She really believed in my abilities and never stopped encouraging me. I remember her making me write letters and cards to practice the vocabulary and grammar. Her support made me work hard and want to do better, and I credit her unceasing commitment for my success today. My parents divorced when I was in college, and in her early 50s, my mom had to apply for her first job. Scared but undeterred, she enrolled in school and got a job teaching. She then, through sheer determination, secured an executive-level position at General Electric and spent years nurturing their employees, in the U.S. and abroad, with their own careers (just like she’d done with us). Eventually, she branched out and started her own business. She’s been successful at everything she’s done from raising six children to building a career for herself later in life. I have so many great stories about my mom, and I am blessed she lives locally so she can continue to inspire me … and make me laugh. Mom, thank you for sharing all of your love, support, and dedication with me throughout the years. You amaze me. Happy Mother’s Day to you and to all the great moms out there.

HOW TO LIVE TO 99 Betty White’s Secrets of Longevity
EXERCISE YOUR MIND In addition to her busy work schedule, what
Beloved “Golden Girls” actress Betty White is still enjoying her golden years. The famed actress celebrated her 99th birthday this January. While she told People magazine that she’s “blessed with good health, so turning 99 is no different than turning 98,” she also had a few tips for folks looking to make it to their centennial birthday. KEEP LAUGHING “Don’t take yourself too seriously,” White says. “You can lie to others — not that I would — but you cannot lie to yourself.” White has undoubtedly provided many laughs to viewers over the years, but she’s not just playing it up for the camera. Laughter is part of what keeps her young. BE OPTIMISTIC White says a good sense of humor also helps her keep a good attitude and look for the positive rather than “dwelling on the downside.” Avoiding negativity also gives her energy. “It takes up too much energy being negative,” she told People magazine. STAY BUSY With nearly eight decades of acting under her belt, six Emmys on her shelf, and over 120 screen credits to her name, White is no stranger to hard work. As she told Parade in 2018, “I just love to work, so I’ll keep working until they stop asking.”
keeps Betty White sharp? Crossword puzzles! She told Katie Couric in an interview, “I’m addicted. An admitted addict. I just can’t put ’em down.”
FIND A CAUSE White is a lifelong animal lover. She calls her golden retriever, Pontiac, “the star of the house.” While pet ownership itself comes with proven health benefits, White has channeled her love for animals in bigger causes. She’s been a trustee and board member of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association for over 40 years and has done work to help protect endangered species in the wild. Funds raised from White’s official fan club, Bet’s Pets, all go to support animal charities. EMBRACE YOUR VICES White told Parade she loves vodka and hot dogs “probably in that order,” which just goes to show that you don’t have to forgo your treats to live to 99.
TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
JESSICA
After your appointment,
She also values working with Dr. Scott and the rest of the team at the office, who all get along well. Jessica says the work environment is great, which helps the day run smoothly and ensures that patients get the best possible care. Those important qualities have kept her with us for the past two years. Jessica previously worked at the front desk of a skin cancer surgery center, so she’s no stranger to the medical field. Part of what piqued her interest in her current job was the opportunity to learn something new: “I wanted to learn something different and get to know a different field of medicine.” Outside of the office, you can find Jessica outdoors. “As soon as I’m off work, I’m out in the open air,” she says. One favorite activity is kayaking on the Potomac when the weather is warm, but she likes to go camping and fishing year-round. She also says family time is important for her, adding, “I have nieces and nephews who are all under the age of 5, so they definitely keep me on my toes!”
the last face you’ll see before you leave our office is Jessica’s. She works at patient check- out, makes follow-up
appointments, and does billing and coding for the
office. Jessica says being the last point of contact for our patients provides a great opportunity.
“I make sure all of their questions are answered and that they leave happy and satisfied with their care” she says.
One of her favorite parts of the job is interacting with patients. “We’re getting new patients all the time through referrals, but we also have patients who come back repeatedly. It’s great seeing them because we recognize their faces and know their names.”
We’re so glad to have Jessica on our team. We know our patients appreciate the care she and the other staff put into their jobs each day.

FACIAL FILLERS FAQ Learn More About This Common Facial Rejuvenation Procedure
Facial fillers are a great fit if you’re looking for a facial rejuvenation procedure that is low risk, has a quick recovery time, and is well tolerated by the body. WHAT CAN FILLERS DO FOR YOU? Fillers do just what their name suggests — they fill and volumize areas on the face to eliminate lines and fill in depressions. They are commonly used to do the following:
Though that’s not an exhaustive list, those are the areas our patients request the most and benefit from the most. ARE FILLERS SAFE? Here at Eye Plastic Associates, we only use fillers with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring, gel- like substance already present in and produced by the skin. As with any procedure, there are some risks involved. However, hyaluronic acid injections are very low risk and reversible. If a lump or bump occurs, we can address it with a dissolving agent. Allergic reactions or an infection related to this type of filler are very rare. WHAT’S THE PROCEDURE LIKE AND HOW LONG DOES HEALING TAKE? Because hyaluronic acid is so well tolerated, no pre-testing is required. That means you just need an appointment for the injections and a follow-up a few weeks later to check in with Dr. Scott.
Some patients worry that the procedure will be painful, but it’s only as painful as a typical needle stick. Lidocaine (a numbing solution) is mixed with the filler to help reduce immediate discomfort and pain. Most patients find that once the lidocaine has worn off, they don’t need any pain medication. After the procedure, some swelling or bruising may occur as your body adapts, but this often goes away quickly. Some patients don’t experience any bruising and are fully healed in 3–5 days, while others need 7–10 days. We have several procedures available to help with facial rejuvenation. Fillers work well with other processes like Botox and Kybella (fat dissolving agent). • • • • •
1 lb asparagus spears 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/8 tsp red pepper flakes Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Place shaved asparagus in a bowl and blot off excess moisture with a paper towel. 3. In a separate bowl, make a vinaigrette by whisking together lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and olive oil. 4. Pour vinaigrette over shaved asparagus and add Parmesan cheese, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Toss to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Could Vaccine Passports Open Doors for Travel?
CONCERNS ABOUT VACCINATION VERIFICATION Could Vaccine Passports Open Doors for Travel?
Are you hoping to travel this summer? Not like how you “traveled” from your bedroom to your living room couch all this past year, but really travel — get out and see the world beyond your hometown. With the COVID-19 vaccines finally available, millions of people are becoming immune to the virus that has ravaged the global economy, especially in the areas of tourism and hospitality. Industry leaders in these sectors are understandably eager for the vaccine to bring back tourism. Some are hoping vaccine passports will play a part in jump-starting tourism around the world. Vaccine passports are a means by which someone can prove they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are, therefore, free to travel internationally. Some countries are eager for the sort of verification these passports could bring, should they exist. The Seychelles, Cyprus, Romania, and other countries have all said they would welcome tourists who could prove they were vaccinated.
Now, you might be sitting on the same couch you’ve sat on for the past year, thinking, “Well, I would like to travel internationally after I get vaccinated!” However, this proposal is not without concerns. Firstly, health care officials still don’t know if vaccinated people can transmit the virus. So, even if they’re vaccinated, they could still spread it to unvaccinated people around the world. Another concern is a vaccine passport’s potential to create classes of “haves” and “have nots” among travelers. Many developing countries won’t receive the vaccine for another few years. Should they be barred from returning to normal? Similarly, could the vaccine passport be abused domestically, enabling private businesses to bar customers from their spaces without proof of vaccination? Finally, what form would these passports take if they were to exist? Would they be on a smartphone app? A laminated card? A verified doctor’s note? So, while the prospect of traveling far and wide this summer after getting vaccinated is exciting, it might be better to temper your expectations for now and hope for clearer guidelines in the near future.
