DOES YOUR ORTHOSIS OR PROSTHESIS NEED A TUNE-UP?
At Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics, we design our custom orthotic and prosthetic devices to be durable enough to support your needs, whether you’re heading up the mountain for a hike or just spending time with the grandkids. But even the best device doesn’t last forever! Changes in your body, daily demands, or even just general wear and tear can all impact its performance. And that means that a device that once felt supportive can slowly become uncomfortable or less effective. 2. Your Device No Longer Fits the Way It Used To Bodies change over time, and a device that fit a few years ago might not fit as well as it used to. Unfortunately, that poor fit can reduce stability and increase friction against the skin. Watch out for: • Feelings of looseness or slipping
• Tight areas that weren’t there before • A need to overtighten straps or liners
3. You’re Experiencing Skin Breakdown Skin health is critical for anyone using an orthotic or prosthetic device, so if you notice any of the following, it’s definitely time to schedule a check-up: • Blisters • Calluses • Open sores • Persistent redness after removing the device 4. Your Walking Pattern Has Changed If you find yourself walking in an unusual way – whether that’s limping, taking shorter steps, or simply finding walking more difficult – it could be a sign that your device needs adjustment. Even if these changes seem mild now, it’s important to address them, as impaired walking patterns can strain the hips, knees, and lower back. 5. You’re Working Harder to Do Everyday Tasks When you find yourself working harder, it may mean your device is not performing its job properly. The sign might be subtle: you may find yourself avoiding certain movements or noticing that you tire more easily. But they can build over time, and updated designs can improve the ease and efficiency of your movement. 6. Your Activity Level Has Changed Maybe daily tasks don’t feel too difficult, but you’ve become more active or taken up a new, physically demanding hobby. In that case, definitely schedule an assessment. Remember, your device should reflect your lifestyle, and we can help you set up with the right components and designs to meet your needs. 7. You’ve Had a Recent Health Change Medical changes often affect device needs, and a simple reassessment ensures your device continues to support your health goals. Some common medical-related reasons for a check-up include: • Surgery • Changes in circulation • Joint stiffness or weakness • Changes in residual limb shape www.howardrehabcenter.com
8. You’re Relying on Temporary Fixes Temporary comfort adjustments, such as adding padding or layering your socks, should stay temporary. Persistent use of these kinds of fixes suggests your device isn’t working as intended, and we can help you find safer, long-term solutions. 9. The Device Shows Visible Wear It’s inevitable that your device will eventually start to wear down with use, but even minor damage can affect performance and safety. If you notice the following, give us a call: • Cracks or thinning materials • Worn footplates or joints • Frayed straps or loose hardware 10. It’s Been a While Since Your Last Evaluation Even without obvious issues, routine checkups help maintain comfort, function, and durability. And more importantly, they can prevent issues from developing entirely! So if it’s been over a year since you saw us last, now’s a great time to schedule your appointment. Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics is Here to Help Your orthosis or prosthesis should support your life, not hold you back. Our team is happy to take a look at your device, even if the complaint seems small. Remember, we want to help you stay active and comfortable! Give us a call today to get started. Call Today!
