MOTION + CONSISTENCY The Key to Recovery
When you experience pain or suffer from an injury, it might seem like common sense to stop moving altogether and rest to get better. And while you’ll likely want to put a pause on your exercise program for a while, you won’t get better simply by not moving. In most cases, slow, consistent movement may actually be key to your recovery. Studies have found that bed rest usually isn’t the best prescription for injuries and pain, like those related to back pain. Musculoskeletal expert Dr. Chris Maher explains, “What we’ve learned is that most tissues recover more quickly from injury or trauma if they’re gently loaded [aka used].” Maher’s advice is backed up by other experts. Motion combined with consistency is the key to healing injuries and feeling better. When we see patients once but don’t see them again for a while, we get concerned. Especially in the early phases of treatment, professional intervention is so important to getting better. Consistency is key. KEEP UP WITH YOUR PT Patients who are consistent with their PT early on see better results, and those who stick with their program are able to fully heal and recover. This is true for coming in to meet with your PT as well as continuing your exercises at home. Consistent movement as directed by your PT will help you build the muscles to safely get back to your favorite activities pain- and injury-free. Being consistent with your program will help you build the habits to take you through your recovery and beyond.
As the weather gets nicer, it can be especially tempting to skip out on PT to spend more time outside. But with the warmer weather and more active season, it’s more important than ever to stick with your PT plan. Only consistency will you get to a place where you can enjoy the activities you love. If you’re experiencing pain and rest isn’t helping, or if you’ve fallen behind on your PT program, we’re here for you. At Cornerstone Physical Therapy Health & Wellness Center, you’ll find caring, personalized service. Give us a call and get back on the road to recovery.
