Supporting Neurodiverse Team Members Employers play a crucial role in creating an inclusive environment where neurodiverse employees can thrive and this doesn’t need to be daunting. Here are some strategies to support neurodiverse team members in the payroll industry: Have an open conversation – It’s that simple, ask your employee “What can I do to support you?”. Something as simple as understanding the language they need you to use can make a major difference. People are so afraid to address the elephant in the room, but I promise you, it’s worse when you don’t. Create a communication passport – If you send me a 500-word email, I can promise you I am not going to read it but ping me bullet points on MS Teams and you’ll get my attention. An email with a daunting subject line – that’s
getting ignored and I’m going to spend days catastrophizing over it. There is no one size fits all and really understanding how to communicate with neurodiverse employees can make a big difference to the level of engagement between you and them. My husband works for the police, and I’ve recently seen they’ve allowed employees to use email signatures to state things such as “I have dyslexia so if you notice spelling mistakes in my emails, please be patient” or “I am neurodiverse and struggle to read long emails. I prefer to communicate via phone call” which I was so impressed with. Provide Clear Instructions and Expectations : Use clear, concise, and unambiguous language when giving instructions. Providing written guidelines can help reinforce verbal communication. Create a Structured Environment : A predictable and structured work environment can help neurodiverse individuals manage their tasks more effectively. Consider using visual schedules and checklists.
