Message from Mr Sunny Varkey GEMS Founder

Dear GEMS Education Families, As partners in the educational journey of your children, we reflect on the many achievements and learnings of the year gone by and look forward to the promising opportunities that await our students as they take their next steps. This yearbook is a record of the wonderful things our students have accomplished. We are proud of the strides they have made academically, socially, and personally. It is the collective effort of our dedicated educators, supportive parents, and, most importantly, the hard work and enthusiasm of our students that contribute to our shared success. Our educators continue to inspire, guide, and nurture your children, fostering a love for learning that extends well beyond the classroom. We believe in providing an environment that not only educates but also shapes well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and values needed to navigate an ever-changing world. GEMS Education is more than an education provider; we are a family. A diverse, international family that shares in the triumphs and challenges that come with raising and educating the next generation. Your trust and partnership are invaluable to us, and we are grateful for the privilege of teaching and supporting each unique child in our care.

As you will know, our focus on Family First drives us forward in all our thinking and activity and that will never change. Let us celebrate and nurture these important family bonds and never forget our duty of love and care to those nearest and dearest to us. GEMS Education also strongly believes in fostering an environment where every student feels a sense of belonging and is encouraged to embrace the values that make them compassionate, responsible, and respectful global citizens. These are not just empty words or concepts; they are lifelong values that will serve our students long after they have left school, that shape their character and empower them to make positive contributions to the world in whatever career or walk of life they choose to follow. I feel that the world, which is currently so full of challenges, is in need of the kind of leaders of change that we are nurturing at GEMS, as well as individuals who are tolerant and accepting of all cultural differences that make up our global family and should never divide us. Thank you again for entrusting us with the care of your children. We will strive every day to repay that trust with the best education for them possible.

Warm regards, Sunny Varkey Founder, GEMS Education

Message from Mr Dino Varkey Group CEO of GEMS Education

Dear GEMS Families, A yearbook is not merely a record of the last 12 months; it is also, and much more importantly, an opportunity to remember, share, and celebrate all the wonderful stories - big, small, individual, and collective – that together make up the year gone by. I know for a fact that every academic year in every GEMS school is filled with truly special stories. Special because every milestone in our students’ journeys is significant, formative, and momentous. These are milestones that will, after all, shape each student’s direction and future, helping to define the possibilities of tomorrow and determine just how far they will go and what impact they will have on the world. It therefore gives me immense pleasure to hear about and share in the many stories and achievements of our students as we look back on another incredibly successful school year – one filled with endless discovery, learning, opportunity, perseverance, hard work, triumphs, and joy. The role of parents in their children’s success can never be overstated. GEMS families provide the foundation for our students to flourish, and I want to thank all parents for their support as they work in partnership with our teachers and school to ensure their children’s progress, wellbeing, and happiness. We do not take your input and collaboration for granted and appreciate and value the trust you have placed in GEMS to serve and care for your children. To those students and families continuing with us for another year, let me reaffirm GEMS’ commitment to delivering the highest quality education for all. To those that have graduated and moved on to the next stage of their educational journey, I extend my best wishes and hopes for your continued success. Congratulations to the entire school community for a rewarding and fulfilling 2023- 24 academic year! With warmest regards, Dino Varkey Group Chief Executive Officer, GEMS Education

Message from our CEO

Dear WIS Community, I am very proud to share the success of GEMS Wellington International School and I hope that you enjoy reading the Yearbook 2024. Our students continue to achieve the very best in their academic studies and I know our graduating class will be a force for good as they head off on the next step on their education journey. They are an exceptional group who will be fantastic ambassadors for WIS across the globe. This year we have continued to drive forward our commitment to the growth of the whole child and the revision and launch of our core values has been central to this. Integrity, Empathy and Fortitude. Three words that have significant influence and power. Demonstrating a deep understanding of what is right and how to make a difference through action is an important aspect of integrity. We continually challenge our students and community to consider how individual decisions will impact on those around them. We also delve deep into our own understanding of truth and honesty. Having integrity is not always straightforward and as our youngest children thrive and grow we acknowledge that working alongside parents and families we can significantly support our children to be come genuine global citizens of the future. Empathy is the touchstone of every WIS student, teacher, leader and parent within the community. How can we work successfully in our thriving, vibrant international setting if we do not have empathy for each other’s needs and culture? Nurturing a strong sense of self and our place in the world ensures that our children become global citizens, confident in their own ideas and feelings with a strong understanding of how they can influence and support those around them. Our students show empathy every day, they exhibit responsible approaches to behaviours and respect personal space, they demonstrate philanthropic actions and care for the region and beyond; they commit to an understanding of how friendships at school can become life-long relationships; a WIS student cares.

GEMS WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL 10

Of course, being empathetic and demonstrating integrity requires commitment and determination, these are not easy characteristics to master. The inclusion of fortitude in our values is crucial to remind us all that being a successful individual and being a valued member of society takes effort. I am proud of all of our students who can continuously return to a challenging task, master or try a new skill and dedicate their time to what is important to them. Whether this is through their academic studies, charitable works, participating in sport or performing arts, completing the Duke of Edinburgh or learning a new language; the opportunities to challenge ourselves at WIS are endless. Throughout this year we have embraced the importance of family and our partnerships with you. The Founder of GEMS Education, Mr Sunny Varkey initiated a new movement, ‘Family First’ to ensure we are celebrating and reminded of the importance of our connection with all generations across our families, those that are close by and those that may be far away. The connection, not the distance is the focus. As we complete another incredibly successful year at GEMS Wellington International School, let us remind ourselves of the people that make our school so special. Our wonderful students, leaders, teachers and learning assistants, administrators, support team, security guards and bus drivers - they are all crucial in the everyday experience of being a part of this incredibly special school that is WIS. With the ongoing support of our dedicated WISPA team of parents and our highly experienced Local Advisory Board we know we will continue to thrive. Thank you to Tina Chagoury and Mr Nick Sharratt for their commitment to the leadership of these important groups. Finally, thank you to Chanelle Hughes and the team for creating this wonderful Yearbook, a celebration of so many incredible and unique moments for you to enjoy. Message from our Associate Principal As we close another chapter in our school’s journey, I am filled with pride and excitement as I reflect on the remarkable achievements of our school community. Earlier this year, we were thrilled to announce that our collective efforts had been recognised as we were honoured as the ‘British International School of the Year’ by the Independent Parent School Magazine. This accolade, coupled with our outstanding rating in the UAE inspection framework, reaffirms our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. GEMS Wellington International School now places as one of the very few schools in the UAE with such a rich legacy and history of high achievement, an achievement I’m proud of but would like to extend my gratitude to our amazing teachers and leaders who go above and beyond daily for our children.

Our curriculum continues to evolve, offering students a diverse range of opportunities for growth and exploration. From the vibrant elective subjects in Middle School to the specialised teaching in the Lower School, our students are flourishing academically and creatively. Moreover, our personalised pathways for older students, navigating through GCSE and IB study, ensure that each individual’s potential has been nurtured and realised. As we forge ahead, we are privileged to collaborate with world-class partners who enrich our curriculum and provide unparalleled learning experiences. From West End Stage for aspiring performers to 8Billion Ideas for future entrepreneurs, and Shape Robotics for coding and AI enthusiasts, our partnerships ensure that our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. I am immensely grateful for the dedication and leadership of our Student Senior Leadership Team (SSLT), under the guidance of our Head boy and Head girl, Ujjwal and Wiann, where their genuine commitment has made a tangible difference. I am thrilled for Tarun and Maya as they step into their roles, poised to carry forward our mission whilst actively embodying our school values. Together, we’ve achieved so much, and I couldn’t be prouder. As we look to the year ahead, I’m filled with confidence that we’ll accomplish even greater things. Let’s keep pursuing excellence, staying true to our values of Integrity, Empathy and Fortitude, and empower our students to reach their fullest potential. Andrew Jenkins Associate Principal

Our commitment to holistic education continues to be exemplified through our comprehensive extra-curricular program, “Explore, Enrich, Excite.” With over 100 clubs offered weekly, students have grasped every available opportunity to pursue their passions and interests outside the classroom. Furthermore, our extensive international trip programme featuring destinations such as Japan, USA, Kenya, and Thailand, has allowed students to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, fostering global citizenship and understanding. Beyond the classroom, our students continue to astound us with their endeavors in sports, the arts, and philanthropy. Their caring nature is evident in the multitude of sustainability initiatives and personal philanthropic projects they passionately drive forward.

Our Executive Team

Empathy is one of the three school values that plays a very important role in our school culture; it’s the soft skill that rules in a hard skills world. We all get plenty of experiences in a “hard skills context” - gaining and applying knowledge, building specific technical skills, but we also get to apply and learn a series of “soft skills”, enhancing how we work and act with others. The ability to personalise communication towards one another by putting ourselves in another person’s shoes. This year in particular, we are very proud of the provision that supports our community’s understanding of what it means to show empathy towards one another. Children learn their foundations through GroWell and ChooseWell - each programme centering on growth, personal performance and reflection. Skills are learned and applied in making effective and informed choices for our wellbeing. None of us will always get this right and we can all find showing empathy a hard “soft skill” to master. Students demonstrating

social responsibility in an abundance of contexts - through leadership or through events - makes an empathetic mark on the lives of children in our school community and beyond. Looking to the future, and looking at the world we will all be existing in, empathy will be integral to everything we do. It will be one of the only human qualities that will sit as a differentiator between us and AI. Empathy sits at the centre of our three values because it is a transformative skill that underpins everything we do at GEMS Wellington International School. There is no script - there is no right or wrong way to show it but we all have the ability to demonstrate it. It is more than just understanding the feelings and experiences of others; it’s about caring deeply for people and having the integrity to do right by them. Sarah Wright Senior Vice Principal

It is with real pride and gratitude that I reflect on our shared commitment to remarkable learning and teaching. At WIS, we prioritise the professional development of our teachers, ensuring they have access to the finest opportunities in evidence-based practice, research-based pedagogy, high-performance learning, and wellbeing initiatives. We firmly believe that investing in our teachers translates to exceptional daily experiences for our students, inspiring them to learn more each day and share these outstanding moments with their families. Their determination is modelled to our students, instilling the belief that setbacks will always be overcome. This fortitude sets a positive tone in the classroom, creating an environment where students feel safe, empowered to ask questions, take risks, and engage in their learning wholeheartedly. The resilience demonstrated by our teachers and students extends far beyond academic performance, shaping their characters and mindsets as they navigate life inside and outside of school. As we come to the end of another memorable year, we have much to celebrate and many happy memories to cherish. The year has been truly extraordinary, marked by notable achievements we’ve collectively celebrated, be they academic or personal milestones. In addition to individual successes, there has been a unifying ethos that embodies our school’s values of Integrity, Empathy, and Fortitude. Our supportive school community extends beyond textbooks and classrooms; it involves cultivating friendships, connections, understanding, and empathy. We have witnessed countless examples of kindness and collaboration, turned challenges into opportunities and obstacles into stepping stones for success. Devoted teachers, enthusiastic students, and supportive parents have all played crucial roles in shaping our nurturing school community by fostering positive relationships, embracing challenges, and providing unwavering support. Throughout the year, our students exemplified empathy in action, showing patience, understanding, and a willingness to learn from others. Whether through acts of kindness, collaborative projects, or meaningful interactions, they cultivated a culture of support and inclusivity. Reflecting on the past academic year, our students at WIS have continuously impressed with their genuine desire to serve. The term ‘serve’ is chosen deliberately, embodying the compassion they show when helping one another, their innate drive to support both local and distant communities through our school initiatives, and a trait that will extend far beyond their time with us, undoubtedly making the world a better place. This desire for service is not just an action but a reflection of the values we hold dear at WIS, with each student interpreting and shaping these principles in their own unique way. As they move forward into the next academic year or the next chapter of their lives, they carry these values with them ensuring that the legacy of WIS is one of positive impact and meaningful contribution. So to that end, I would like to congratulate every single WIS student on being an ambassador for growth, and wish you all a wonderful summer break. Benjamin Parkes Head of Upper School

At the culmination of yet another transformative academic year at GEMS Wellington International School, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we reflect upon the significant strides we’ve made in nurturing a culture of responsibility, sustainability, and global citizenship. This year was marked by the UAE hosting COP 28 which served as a poignant reminder of the global interconnectedness of environmental challenges. It reinforced our commitment to preparing our students not just academically but as informed global citizens, ready to engage in discussions and actions that contribute to the sustainability of our planet. As we witness the impact of many initiatives led by our students this year, it is evident that our students are not merely learners but responsible contributors to the wellbeing of our community and the world at large. As the Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion, I am proud to be able to talk about how our learning environments here at WIS support everyone. At our school, Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every student deserves an environment where they feel valued, respected, and able to thrive academically and socially. Our classrooms, corridors and common areas are designed to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to excel. We foster a culture of collaboration, where students support each other’s learning and celebrate individual achievements. Our dedicated staff members work tirelessly to create a safe and nurturing atmosphere where everyone feels empowered to reach their full potential. Together, we continue to uphold our commitment to providing Inclusive learning environments that inspire growth, creativity, and success for all. Wendy Harris Assistant Headteacher - Inclusion Director of Inclusion for the GEMS Wellington Cluster

Our students continue to amaze us with their incredible IB outcomes and gaining admissions to incredible Universities. The individual success of our students in getting into the right university for them far outweighs anything else as evidence of personalised success. Every year our students build and build and grow their confidence until they leave us and go onto further study. What comforts me and the other teachers even more than seeing them grow on their journey with us, is seeing them grow on their journey without us. We have had more students come back to see us this year than ever before and it’s testament to them to see their further study and employment and all of the successes they are undertaking. Message from our Head Girl

Each year, as the Yearbooks are given out, searching for your picture among its pages, writing sentimental messages, and signing leavers’ shirts always stir up bittersweet memories. Yet, this year carries a different weight. As I graduate from WIS and head off to my dream University, I’m reminded that after this summer break, I won’t be returning to the place where my dreams were given the space to flourish. At WIS, I’ve learned that education is not simply learning within the confines of a classroom, but rather a lifelong attitude that manifests itself as infinite intellectual curiosity. The diversity of thought, lived experiences and people inspire me to stretch the boundaries of my understanding of the world every day. Through the expansive exposure to different ideas within the GCSE and IB curriculum, we are equipped not only with critical thinking skills to navigate the world but also with the aptitude to problem-solve issues that supersede global boundaries, enabling us to contribute meaningfully to critical problems such as climate change, social inequality, and technological innovation. However, above all, the most priceless thing WIS has offered me is the unwavering support I have received throughout my journey here. Not only have I fostered invaluable relationships with my peers and teachers but they have also taught me the importance of exploring, questioning, and creating beyond traditional boundaries, allowing my interests to pave the way. As Head Girl, it has been my privilege to equip the student body with the platform to facilitate change within their year groups. As I observe the next generation of leaders at WIS I find immense hope in the future of our school, our community and beyond. Although my time at WIS has come to a close, I hope that the platform we have created echoes in a reverberating legacy through the corridors long after we graduate. Wiann Wilson Head Girl

Message from our Head Boy

In time, 2500 days to be exact, WIS has shaped me into the student I always strived to be. Simultaneously, WIS itself has grown year on year to become the best version of itself. Having adapted through the toughest of challenges, and showing no signs of slowing down, both myself and WIS have a lot left to offer. WIS has facilitated my curiosity, catalyzed my maturity, and appreciated my talents. This is where I learnt what it means to be a good friend, what it means to have a good time, and what it takes to be successful. I’ve witnessed first-hand the determination and drive of this community. From our athletes to our scholars, everyone here has something to be proud of and someone else to look up to WIS has supported me, believed in me, and always felt like home. Whether it’s a friend I can trust or a teacher I can rely on, there’s always someone around the corner who is willing to help. There aren’t many places in my life nor in the world that will offer me a community like the one at WIS, with the perfect balance of achievement and amusement. There’s a lot about this school that I’ll miss for years to come, and I hope that anyone who has the privilege of calling WIS home next year and beyond cherishes it, and values their time here for how special it can be. For me, memories from the café to the Falcon Centre are engraved in my mind, and will hopefully make me chuckle well into my seventies, as they do now. 2500 days, and I could do 2500 more. Beyond Excellence

As our partnership with 8billionIdeas grows from strength to strength, we are delighted that our Year 8 Broadcast Days are in their second year. In form groups, students have been given the opportunity to work directly with 8billion facilitators to develop world-changing ideas, during their drop-down days. The pitching session has been a highlight, giving the students a platform to practise their communication skills and showcase their innovative ideas. This year also sees the launch of our bespoke 8billionIdeas workshops. Perform Better workshops have been an exciting development, where students have been learning about nutrition, physical and mental health, and exploring their leadership potential. Next year, we are looking forward to expanding this further to more students across the school.

Collaborating with West End Stage at WIS has been an incredible journey for us and we have been lucky enough to partner with them for a second year. We’re immensely fortunate to have worked on a charity single this year for Harmony House, a project that not only touched hearts but also achieved remarkable success, hitting number one on iTunes soundtrack charts and securing the top spot for downloads in the UAE.

This achievement speaks volumes about the talent and dedication of our students and the power of collaboration in the arts. Our elite performing arts students eagerly anticipated the opportunity to perform alongside West End artists at the Wellington Performing Arts Gala this year and it was a sold out show!

Outside Classroom Trips

Japan We had an incredible time and enjoyed every moment of the Japan trip, which the school had expertly planned. They kept us secure while taking us to lovely, popular locations. Everything went as planned thanks to the great preparation. During the trip, we made new friends and had a terrific experience interacting with others. They gave us a fantastic tour guide who assisted us with everything, led us at every turn, and had a ton of recommendations for places to see. Additionally, we want to thank Lush Escapes for their invaluable assistance in planning this amazing trip for us. They had provided us with the opportunity to visit Universal Studios and Disney World; this was an unforgettable event, as were the following: Mount Fuji, the bullet train experience to Osaka, the Sensoji temple, Shibuya Crossing and shopping, calligraphy and samurai classes, the Team Lab Museum, and the Bamboo Grove. This is a trip you wouldn’t want to miss. Layan Al Sharabi, Liana Antonios and Alyssa El Mourad

Switzerland This year’s ski trip was truly one of the best, if not the best, trips I’ve ever been on. It was wonderful to visit one of the top ski locations in the world, especially with so many amazing people. I made lasting memories not only with my close friends but also with new acquaintances I met along the way. The camp itself was fantastic. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and our instructors were always supportive, pushing us to do our best on the slopes. Each evening, the staff organised fun activities to keep us entertained. There wasn’t a single day when I didn’t enjoy myself, and every night I went to sleep eager to get back on the slopes the next day. I can say with certainty that I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and was not looking forward to saying goodbye. Special thanks go to the teachers who put in so much time and effort to organise this trip and make it an unforgettable experience for all of us. I would absolutely love the opportunity to attend another ski trip, as so many wonderful memories were made and it was truly a cherished experience. Chloe Ward - Year 10

US University I just wanted to say thank you for organising the trip, it was really fun and I had a great time. Some highlights for me were touring Harvard and visiting the Empire State Building. The top 3 universities for me were Harvard, Yale and Columbia because I liked the facilities, campus life and the overall way of learning in each university. - Jiya Vivek Year 10 I really enjoyed the Uni trip that you had organised for us and some of my key highlights were visiting the top colleges of this world and seeing what their traditions and lifestyles were like as well as visiting the main tourist attractions such as time square and the empire state building where the views that we saw were absolutely beautiful. I think that my top 3 universities were Brown, Yale and Harvard as for Brown and Yale the options for Double Majoring really stood out to me whereas for Harvard the culture and traditions really had me interested in the university. Overall, I felt the trip was really enjoyable and that all of the students got along with each other well. - Bhavya Paliwal Year 11 The USA trip is definitely one for the books, the city itself was just beautiful and astonishing to go see. My personal highlights would have to be going to Times Square because throughout the journey we were just having fun as a group and getting to know each other better. I also really enjoyed the tour around the city because there were so many monuments that had deep stories behind them which I enjoyed. The universities I enjoyed going to were: Harvard and Yale. Harvard gave us a very interactive tour and gave us insights on student life and how Harvard works in terms of education. Yale was definitely one of my favorites with the kind people around it as well as the peaceful environment and the number of opportunities given there. Overall, this trip will definitely be a memory to cherish and guides us on how to proceed in life. - Rakshitaa Rahul Year 10

Year 6 Eco Adventure - North Star, Khorfakkan On Wednesday 3rd January Year 6 had the honour to go to a 3 day stay at the Oceanic Resort. When we arrived, we had our lunch and set off to our first activity. Our first wilderness survival we gutted the fish, cooked it, then ate it. After that we learnt how to make fire from flint and steel and cotton wool also with different other ways. Next, we made tents out of 3 wooden sticks, 2 ropes and a waterproof sheet. Once it was complete our instructor (Natalia) poured water on us and tested if it would hold. Finally, we had our delicious dinner sitting with all our friends. Next was campfire then headed off to bed in my room 109. On the second day we had our breakfast which everyone enjoyed. Our first activity was Giant Paddleboarding in which we did boys vs girls (Girls won). Next was raft building but sadly boys won however it was a fun experience. Lunch kept getting yummier every day. After lunch snorkeling which sounded scary at first but was really cool seeing all the different sea creatures. Just be careful, don’t touch the floor incase of… SEA URCHINS! Don’t worry it won’t harm you. To warm up from the cold of the sea we played beach games and some went for a shower. Then was dinner, quiz night which we won 5th place. Finally, it was bed time. Day 3 was my favourite memory of North Star it was the hike to Al Rafisah Dam. It was a very long way up but worth the wait. We even saw a blue lizard on the way up. There was a beautiful view while at the top. Top Tip: don’t look down! When we got to the land surface, we had to go back to school with 1 hour and 30-minute ride back. It was a really fun experience. - Mariya Sheikh Year 6YD

Thailand I really enjoyed Thailand because of the many different activities we did and how organized the trip was. The instructors there made sure we had the best time and had everything perfectly planned. This trip was really underrated because not many people chose it, but in my opinion, I feel that this trip was better than the rest because of how active we were and how organized it was. In conclusion, I feel I really enjoyed the trip, and having a small amount worked to our advantage by getting everyone the same attention. Nada Ibrahim Ragy Year 10XE
