WIS Yearbook 2024

Year 6

Year 6 has been a year full of innovation and adventure and, without doubt, our Year 6 students will reflect on this year with fondness and will cherish the memories of their final year exploring the Primary Curriculum. We started with our exciting Rio Carnival topic where we dived into the culture of Brazil by organizing a carnival full of colour and creative carnival floats. Innovation is a tangible part of our curriculum: in Term 1 we learned all about Victorian inventors and inventions and the children were amazed by the technology and ingenuity of these creations. We empathized with how people lived during the time and analysed how we have used moments in history to improve modern life. If they didn’t already know it, this cohort now realises just how fortunate they are to be a WIS student in 2024. To kick-start 2024, we headed to Khorfakkan for our Year

6 residential. This was a brand-new venue – directly on the beach – and it was a fantastic way to embrace the new year. For many of the children and adults, our residential visit is a true highlight of the year. It was incredible to see the children face their fears, build their resilience and develop their skills of teamwork and collaboration. Of course, Year 6 is an academic milestone in the British Curriculum, but friendship and fostering independence is crucial as the children head towards Year 7. Term 2 led to further innovation as we immersed ourselves into our ‘Humanoids’ topic with a coding masterclass from one of our older students, who showed us how a robot can be used to paint. Year 6 were then able to enhance their robotics skills using Fable Blockly robots. Learning how to programme these robots will certainly equip our students for the future! In Term 3, we continued with our time-travelling and

immersed ourselves in World War Two. All of the Year 6 teachers are incredibly proud of the knowledge that the students absorbed throughout this topic as well as their maturity in analysing key events in history and discussing some causes and effects. Our learning didn’t stop at the door of the classroom: the children applied their creative skills to build model Anderson Shelters as part of our Home Learning and these were proudly displayed in the corridor and in the main Reception area of the school. With all the learning that has taken place, both inside and outside of the classroom this year, the Year 6 Team are very proud of the Year 6 students and their success. We have no doubt that they will continue to shine as they progress through Middle School.
